Former opposition MPs head for Supreme Court in Sierra Leone

Lawyers representing ten former members of Parliament of the opposition All Peoples Congress Party (APC) whose election results were overturned and were subsequently removed from parliament by the High Court have filed an application to the Supreme Court for interpretation of constitutional provisions related to election petitions.

OSIWA donates Le 3.3 Bn to fight Covid-19 in Sierra Leone

The Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) has provided a total of $348,397 to support the fight against the coronavirus pandemic in Sierra Leone. When converted at the official Bank of Sierra Leone exchange rate of Le 9,600 the amount is equivalent to Le 3,344,611,200 (three billion, three hundred and forty four million, six hundred and eleven thousand and two hundred leones).

Sierra Leone miner shut down due to Covid-19

The Tongo-based miner, Sierra Diamond Mining Company, has halted its operation after one its staffers tested positive for Covid-19, Politico has learnt.

The incident has led to the quarantining of scores of the company's workers.

The case, which sources say is a foreign national, is the first in the diamond rich town located in the eastern Kenema district of Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone's president reinstates suspended Resident Minister

The Resident Minister North, Abu Abu Koroma, has been reinstated by President Julius Maada Bio on Thursday 11th June, about a month after his suspension.

Koroma was suspended indefinitely on the 10th of May, 2020, after a leaked video showed him threatening to “shoot to kill” anyone who attempted to cause mayhem in the region. The video came out just two days after the President’s controversial speech on the state of the country’s security.

Pujehun discharges first batch of COVID-19 recoveries

The District Coronavirus Response Committee (DICOVERC) of Pujehun has discharged two people who recovered from COVID-19 after undergoing treatment.

Both men were admitted at the district’s treatment center on the 19th of May this year after testing positive for the virus just a day before.

The men were the first two cases recorded in the district. They were registered as cases #510 and #511 on the country’s COVID-19 register.

ACC raid exposes corruption ring in Bo DHMT

A raid by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Sierra Leone has exposed a corruption ring at the District Health Management Team in Bo, with the arrest of three people.

Those arrested are suspected of running an illegal scheme through which they collected cash from unsuspecting nurses with the promise of facilitating their enrolment into the official government payroll.

ACC officials say the nurses paid Le250, 000 each for an application form.

Sierra Leone: ACF rolls out project to support 320 quarantine homes

The charity Action Against Hunger, also known by its French acronym, ACF, is currently rolling out a project that is aimed at supporting 320 quarantine homes in the Western Area and Moyamba districts. The project is part of the organization’s Emergency COVID-19 response which is funded by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA).

On Monday ACF donated essential items to 10 homes in the Western Area Urban. The homes were located in areas like Low Cost, New England and Fire Force - Circular Road.
