BRAC Sierra Leone supports local farmers in south and eastern regions

In a bid to boost local farmers in crop production, the charity BRAC Sierra Leone, through a European Union (EU) sponsored project, has supported rural farmers with Le281, 000, 000 worth of implements and seedlings.

Over 200 farmers in four districts in the South and Eastern regions of the country: Bo, Pujehun, Kenema and Kailahun, benefitted from the gesture.

Islamic Marriage brought before Sierra Leone's Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of Sierra Leone is expected to commence hearing in a landmark case this week on Islamic marriage.

Women’s rights campaigner and lawyer, Fatmata Sorie, is championing the case which is seeking clarity specifically on divorce in marriages conducted under Islamic law.

Sierra Leone's education minister self-isolates over COVID-19 as wife tests positive

The Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Dr David Sengeh, has urged Sierra Leoneans to emulate his family and put their fate in the government’s Covid-19 response system.

Dr Sengeh made the call as he revealed that he and his family had gone into self-isolation after his wife tested positive for the virus. It followed confirmation of a positive test result for his 70-year father, Paul Sengeh, whom the family had visited in hospital.

Paul was said to be responding to treatment at the 34 Military Hospital.

Sierra Leoneans lament effect of COVID-19 curfew

Residents across Freetown are calling on the Sierra Leone government to review the 10-hour curfew imposed as part of measures to curtail the spread of COVID-19, which they say has had a counterproductive effect on their livelihoods.

The 9pm to 7am curfew was declared in April, after the country recorded its index case of the disease.

Magistrate to rule on Blyden objection

Magistrate Hannah Bonnie has on Friday 12th June 2020 withdrawn files relating to the case of former Social Welfare Minister Dr. Sylvia Blyden and Hussain Muckson Sesay for ruling after Blyden, who is representing herself, applied for one of the charges against her to be expunged on grounds of timeliness.

NASSIT worker on suspended jail term

Twenty-seven year old George Langley, a staff of the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT), has been jailed for twelve months by Magistrate Hannah Bonnie, after he pleaded guilty to stealing a vehicle.

The Magistrate suspended the sentence until the 30th of June by which time the convict must comply with the court’s request for him to “satisfactorily compensate the complainant.”

Alleged fraud victim testifies in court

Abdulai Top Mansaray, a business man who alleges that he was defrauded of the sum of $10, 000 (ten thousand US dollars) by one Alhassan Bundu in a car deal, has testified before Magistrate Hannah Bonnie in Freetown in an ongoing preliminary investigation into a two count charge of conspiracy to defraud and fraudulent conversation.
