Sierra Leone launches long awaited TVET policy

The Sierra Leone government has launched the long awaited national Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Policy.

Minister of Technical and Higher Education presided over the launching on Thursday, June 11, at the Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC). At the same occasion, the government also launched the Sierra Leone Skills Development Project.

One functional refrigerator and no formalin at sole mortuary in northern Sierra Leone

Health authorities in Makeni are appealing to the central government to help provide support for the effective functioning of the only mortuary that is serving the entire northern region.

The mortuary which is situated in the Regional Government Hospital in Makeni City, serves all seven districts in the North and Northwest regions, and it currently has only one functioning refrigerator, which officials say is grossly inadequate to meet the demands of the population.

Sierra Leone to reopen schools for public exams

The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has announced plans to reopen schools for public examinations to be conducted. The ministry made the announcement on Thursday, following an engagement with education officials and health authorities.

In a statement, the ministry said that schools will be reopened for pupils who are supposed to write the three public examinations: BECE, NPSE and WASSCE, all of which are conducted by the regional examination body, the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC).

OSIWA donates Le 3.3 Bn to fight Covid-19 in Sierra Leone

The Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) has provided a total of $348,397 to support the fight against the coronavirus pandemic in Sierra Leone. When converted at the official Bank of Sierra Leone exchange rate of Le 9,600 the amount is equivalent to Le 3,344,611,200 (three billion, three hundred and forty four million, six hundred and eleven thousand and two hundred leones).

Sierra Leone miner shut down due to Covid-19

The Tongo-based miner, Sierra Diamond Mining Company, has halted its operation after one its staffers tested positive for Covid-19, Politico has learnt.

The incident has led to the quarantining of scores of the company's workers.

The case, which sources say is a foreign national, is the first in the diamond rich town located in the eastern Kenema district of Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone's president reinstates suspended Resident Minister

The Resident Minister North, Abu Abu Koroma, has been reinstated by President Julius Maada Bio on Thursday 11th June, about a month after his suspension.

Koroma was suspended indefinitely on the 10th of May, 2020, after a leaked video showed him threatening to “shoot to kill” anyone who attempted to cause mayhem in the region. The video came out just two days after the President’s controversial speech on the state of the country’s security.
