Gola Rainforest donates towards fight against Covid-19

The management of the Gola Rain Forest has donated the sum of Le10 million and 100 bags of 25kg rice towards the national efforts against the Covid-19 pandemic. The donation which was presented to the District Covid-19 Emergency Operation Center (DICOVERC) on Monday is part of the institution’s contribution to tackling the pandemic in all three districts the Gola Forest exists.

Other condiments like onions, tomatoes, vegetable oil, Maggie, salt and soap, were also part of the donated consignment.

Sierra Leone: Man remanded for alleged robbery

Magistrate Hannah Bonnie has ordered that 37-year old Festus Bob be remanded in the custody of the correctional services after he made his first appearance in court as part of preliminary investigations into a robbery charge.

Police prosecutors alleged that Bob, on Tuesday 2nd June, 2020, at Bawbaw Village in the Western Rural Area, conspired with other persons unknown to commit robbery with aggravation.

Sierra Leone: Woman accused of assaulting mother and child gets bail

Twenty-eight year old Mariama Quiwa, accused of assaulting a mother and her child, has been admitted to a Le10 million bail after the alleged victim testified before Magistrate Hannah Bonnie in Freetown.

In her testimony, the plaintiff, Umu Bah, told the court that she was home on the 20th of April 2020 when she had argument with her neighbor Fatmata Ballay over an illegal connection to her satellite dish and electricity meter.

Sierra Leone invents its own ventilator

Students from the Engineering Department at Fourah Bay College (FBC), University of Sierra Leone (USL), have built a homemade mechanical ventilator. The lifesaving machine, which has been named ‘Leone Vent’, was unveiled on Monday at the college’s campus on Mount Aureole.

The project also had technical inputs from the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS), as well and the Medical Equipment Technician at the Connaught Hospital in Freetown.

Sierra Leone teachers protest delayed salary payment

Work at the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) offices in Bo was disrupted for about an hour on Monday after some teachers stormed the facility in protest over delay in payment of the salaries.

The protesters say they are part of 5, 000 new teachers approved by the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education in the last two years.

They say despite their approval and having been working throughout this period, they are yet to receive their first pay.

Police arrest teacher’s “killers” in southern Sierra Leone

Police in Pujehun District have arrested two people in connection to the killing of a school teacher last month. Police say the two men were apprehended on Monday, 8 June.

The teacher, Sondufu Bundu, was killed in May this year, following a dispute between two rival communities - Sawula and Longu villages.

Local Unit Commander (LUC), Paul Bannister, said that they were able to apprehend the two following weeks of intelligence gathering.
