Sierra Leone-US alumni lead tree planting in Kenema

To support the Government’s tree planting initiative a volunteer organization named Sierra Leone United States Alumni Association (SLUSAA) has joined the Ministry of Environment in planting trees within the compounds of various government institutions in Kenema.

Addressing volunteers at the planting sites, the Regional Coordinator East of SLUSAA, Abdul Rahman Kowa noted that the 16th of July every year has been set aside by the association as give back a day to communities, free of cost.

Female genital cutter in court in Sierra Leone

For the first time in the history of Sierra Leone a Sowei (woman engaged in the practice of female genital mutilation) is in court after the death of an initiate.

21-year-old Maseray Sei, a mother of two, died in December 2021 a day after undergoing the procedure at the hands of a Sowei known as Sowoh Sandy, who is said to be in her 60s.

Sandy is charged with manslaughter and not directly for carrying out FGM because the practice itself is not outlawed outright, even though the country’s child rights law forbids children being subjected to “harmful treatment”. 

Opposition MP applauds Sierra Leone election body for fair bye-election

The Parliamentary Leader of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) party, Chernor Maju Bah has applauded the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) for “professionally and credibly” conducting the constituency 056 Parliamentary bye-election in Tonkolili district that was won by their candidate.  

Bah said this during his felicitation statement as the newly elected Member of Parliament, Jawa Sesay, was being sworn in at the house of parliament on Wednesday 13th July 2022.

Opposition MPs condemn NIN criteria to register to vote

Sierra Leone to recruit over 1,000 more teachers

The Government of Sierra Leone through the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) is set to commence the process of recruiting over one thousand (1,000) teachers adding to the over 36,000 teachers that are already on the government payroll.

Sierra Leone Parliament to go digital

In an effort to make Sierra Leone’s parliament move from paper-based to digital, Orange SL, a telecommunication company has supported the law-making body with ten computers according to the Clerk of Parliament, Paran Umar Tarawally.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony of the ten computers on the 14th July 2022, he explained that parliament as an arm of government is speedily moving towards making their systems paperless and that Orange Company has joined them to make it a reality.
