Banks go on strike in Guinea

After the arrest of Aboulaye Sow, Leader of the Guinean Workers Union, (Banks and Insurances), banks and insurance companies in solidarity with their leader have embarked on strike action for the past three days with all their offices closed.

They say their action will continue until their leader is released and freed of all charges they described as unlawful.

Sierra Leone women fired up for safe parliamentary seats

Representing constituency 008 Kailahun district, Bernadette Wuyatta Songa during debate on the Public Elections Act 2022 stated that the bill will make way for over forty women representatives in parliament.

She said the country’s political history cannot be told without mentioning women and explained how in her hometown, not until 2018, were they able to have a woman in leadership.

She stated that the bill intends to accelerate women’s growth.

Sierra Leone expunges NIN from election bill

The Leader of Government Business in the house of parliament, Mathew Nyuma, has said the compulsory part of the National Identification Number (NIN) for voter registration will be expunged from the Public Election Bill of 2022 so that citizens will not be disenfranchised to cast their votes in public elections.

Nyuma said this in the house of parliament during the final debate of the second reading of the bill on Monday 18th July 2022.

Labour Congress wants detention facilities accessible

As part of many recommendations to ensure peace and stability in Sierra Leone, the country’s Labour Congress has called on the Sierra Leone Police to make detention facilities across the country accessible to human rights groups in order to ascertain they are designed to uphold the dignity and rights of detainees.

The group in a Press Statement  following a General Meeting, also called on Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to engage the Sierra Leone Police to ensure that detention facilities are human rights friendly.

Free Cleft Palates surgery for children commences in August

The Surgeon who is also the Medical Superintendent at the Government Hospital in Kenema has disclosed that surgery for children suffering from cleft palates will commence this August in Kenema.

Speaking to Politico on the 21st of July 2022, Dr. Ibrahim Kapuwa described cleft palate as a condition that causes difficulty in speech and breastfeeding for children born with it and that they are most discriminated against in their communities as they grow up.

Gov’t lacks digitized information - new report says

An assessment report by the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) has indicated lack of digitalize information systems in Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs).

The assessment according to officials was conducted through Global Development Advisory (GDA) with support from the Digital Impact Alliance (DIAL) and the Government of Sierra Leone, to assess the data landscape and its use in the country.

Police witness presents exhibits in Tonkolili case
