Opposition parties in Sierra Leone call for PR electoral system

All Political Parties Association- Sierra Leone (APPA-SL) has called for the use of the Proportional Representation (PR) system in the upcoming 2023 national elections, as against the First Past the Post (FPTP) system.

The association made this call yesterday 12th July 2022 at a press conference at the Brookfields Hotel in Freetown, reacting to the PR and Draft Political Parties Bill that is currently before parliament.

Solidaridad empowers women cocoa farmers

An International Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) operating on quality cocoa production in the Eastern Region, Solidaridad has undertaken a two-day capacity and empowerment training in Kenema for women in agriculture with a focus on cocoa farming and chocolate production.

The Programme Manager European Union Ann Marie Roorda said the cocoa project has been implemented in Sierra Leone and Liberia to help identify farmers engaged in cocoa farming, so as to ensure a sustainable economy.

Parliament amends Sierra Leone’s 1991 constitution

Members of Parliament have amended two aspects of the 1991 constitution of Sierra Leone. This amendment has introduced a commissioner for the Northwest region of the country.

The Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone now has six Commissioners, which includes the Chief Electoral Commissioner and five other commissioners inclusive of all the regions.
