Sierra Leone COVID-19 frontline workers on strike

Some of Sierra Leone’s COVID-19 front line workers have embarked on an indefinite strike action due to delay in payment of their incentives. The aggrieved workers who boycotted work on Monday, continued on Tuesday. They said they intended to push on until their backlog is paid.

Sierra Leone Human Rights Commission resettles family banished over alleged witchcraft

The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) says it has resettled a family banished from their village over allegation that they engaged in witchcraft.

Pa Alimamy Sesay and his family – wife and children – were reportedly sent away from Kayasie Village, Safroko Limba Chiefdom in the Bombali District on the orders of the Paramount Chief.

The family spent six months away from home before their resettlement on Tuesday, 26th May, following negotiations championed by the Commission.

Sierra Leone's VP praises Kenema EOC

Vice President of Sierra Leone, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, has praised the efforts of the District Emergency Operations Center (DEOC) in Kenema for their gains in fighting COVID-19.

Vice President Jalloh said gains made in the district should be shared with other DEOCs across the country.

Welt Hunger Hilfe donates thermometers to Kenema

The German humanitarian organization, Welt Hunger Hilfe (WFF), has donated 40 thermometers to the District Emergency Operations Center in Kenema. WHF said the donation is part of their support to fight COVID-19 in the district.

55% of COVID-19 patients have recovered in Sierra Leone

In the last couple of weeks Sierra Leone has recorded a remarkable recovery rate of COVID-19 patients, with more than half of the cumulative total number of confirmed cases having now recovered and left the treatment or isolation centres.

As at today – Monday 1 June – official figures from the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) show that out of the cumulative total number of 865 confirmed cases, 475 have recovered from the disease and no longer had the virus.

ACC extends deadline for assets declaration by Sierra Leone public officials

The Anti-Corruption Commission has extended until close of business today the date for assets declaration by public officials.

The commission announced in a statement on Friday that its offices across the country would be opened on Saturday which was to have been the deadline for the declarations failing which there would be consequences.

But the Commission says Saturday was met with a heavy downpour in the capital. In a statement on Saturday the ACC said it had given a grace period until today, Monday.

Campaigners hail cabinet approval of Cancer Center for Sierra Leone

Healthcare campaigners, particularly those rooting for affordable cancer treatment, have hailed the cabinet approval of funds for the construction of the much anticipated Cancer Treatment Center in Sierra Leone.

News about the cabinet decision was made public by President Julius Maada Bio on Thursday as part of his State Opening of Parliament address.
