UNIMAK begins virtual learning amidst challenges

Rehabilitation of St Andrews School completed

Construction work on the rehabilitation of one of Sierra Leone’s oldest and iconic institutions of learning - St Andrews Secondary School – has completed, Politico has learnt. 

The school which is located in the southern Bo district received a facelift thanks to the government of Sierra Leone, after being in a state of dilapidation for many years.

The National President of the school’s Old Boys Association, John J. B. Lavalie, expressed thanks and appreciation to the President Julius Maada Bio for the gesture.

New project aims to plant 5 million trees in Sierra Leone

President Julius Maada Bio has launched the National Tree Planting Project which aims to plant five million trees in Sierra Leone in the next four years. The project was launched on Friday, June 5th, to mark the World Environment Day.

Bio launched the new environmental initiative at Motormeh, Regent, the site of one of Sierra Leone’s worst environmental disasters. In August 2017, hundreds of people perished in that location when part of a mountain moved down on them during heavy rains.

MRCG trains journalists on reporting emergencies

The Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG), in partnership with the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), has trained 80 journalists in Freetown on reporting on emergencies, with focus on the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

The one day training was conducted on the 4th of May at the YWCA Hall, targeting journalists from print and electronic media in Freetown. Other categories of media professionals, including DJs, were also invited to be part of the training.

Sierra Leone Government clashes with health workers over Covid-19 payments

There seems to be no letup in the row between health workers and the Sierra Leone government after a fresh threat of a strike by medical doctors.

The Sierra Leone Medical and Dental Association (SLMDA) on Wednesday gave a 48-hour ultimatum to the government, demanding that they make all payments due healthcare workers as per the Memorandum of Understanding they signed or face a disruption in the sector.

Hundreds of Sierra Leoneans displaced in Guinea after fire engulfs homes

Hundreds of Sierra Leoneans living in the Guinean capital, Conakry, were left in tears on Wednesday as they watched helplessly while their homes and lifesavings went up in flames. 

It is not exactly clear what caused the fire in the makeshift community of mainly Sierra Leonean fishermen and their families, but the cost has been put at hundreds of millions of leones.
