As Sierra Leone accepts UPR recommendations, CSOs call for ban on FGM

As the government presents its accepted recommendations of the 3rd quarter Universal Periodic Review adoption of the working group report on Sierra Leone’s rights records at the ongoing 48th regular session of the Human Rights Council, the Child Rights Coalition –Sierra Leone (CRC-SL), an advocacy group has expressed dissatisfaction over the government’s non- acceptance of the recommendation to ban the practice of Female Genital Mutilation in Sierra Leone.

‘Robbers’ assault clergy woman

Evidence at High Court No. 2 in Freetown has revealed that some men accused of robbery and the beating up and indecent abuse of a clergy and retired Head Teacher, Jane Lahai on the 20th May 2019 were on a robbery spree in Moyamba Township.

Amadu Turay and 15 others were arraigned in court on the 28th September this year on allegations of robbery and other criminal charges that occurred on the 19th and 20th of May 2019 in Moyamba Town, Southern Province of Sierra Leone.

‘Accelerated Covid-19 Vaccination’ campaign launched

A major drive to increase uptake of Covid-19 vaccine in Sierra Leone has been launched.

The campaign is designed to counter the effect of vaccine hesitancy and apathy, which are driven by fake news and which have caused many Sierra Leoneans to reject the jabs.

Since Sierra Leone started vaccination against the viral pandemic in March 2021, less than 3 percent of the country’s population has received at least one dose of a vaccine, data from the National Covid-19 Emergency Response Center (NaCOVERC) show.

More properties seized following Sierra Leone Commissions of Inquiry

31 properties have been ordered for confiscation and forfeiture to the state following a ruling by the High Court in relation to a government White Paper on the Commissions of Inquiry. Details of the nature of the properties and their owners have not been disclosed to the public but many officials in the past government were named in the three commissions of inquiry set up by the present government, of having cases to answer mostly relating to corruption during their stewardship.

Civic Education engages stakeholders on tree planting

The Ministry of Environment in collaboration with National Council for Civic Education and Development (NaCCED) on the 25th September 2021 engaged service providers and councilors of the two local councils in Kenema on the national tree planting exercise.

Addressing the gathering, the Director of Communications NaCCED Kissma Gassama said the council is charged with the responsibility of educating citizens about their fundamental responsibilities and obligations for the development of the country.
