“No more clandestine abortions”- Advocates

As Sierra Leone joined other parts of the world to commemorate International Safe Abortion Day on the 28th of September 2021, the People’s Alliance for Reproductive Health Advocacy (PARHA) has called for the end to unsafe abortion, noting the importance of the proposed safe abortion bill now Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Bill.

Speaking at the event, the National Coordinator for Human Rights Education Amnesty International Emmanuel Sattie said that anything that is done in secrecy is not good.

Sierra Leone to get new Tourism Act

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs has revealed plans to introduce the first-ever national Tourism Act in the country.  Memunatu Pratt was speaking during the United Nations World Tourism Day on the 27th September 2021 in Freetown.

BO DiCOVERC downsizes staff base

The Bo District Coronavirus Response Centre has on Monday 27th September 2021 removed 85 Support staff from the response team. This according to the centre’s Coordinator, David Fortune was due to the reduction in the workload as a result of fewer COVID-19 confirmed cases in the district.

High inflation in transport – Statistics Sierra Leone

The latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of August has indicated increased inflation rate in transportation by 9.5 percentage points. Statistics Sierra Leone in their monthly presentation of the CPI report to journalists at their Tower Hill Freetown office on Wednesday 22 September 2021 saw transport jump from 10.85 in July to 20.10 in August. The leap was attributed to the increase in the pump price of fuel in the country.

SLIEPA warns investors of boycott

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Sierra Leone Investment and Export Promotion Agency (SLIEPA) Sheku Lexmond Koroma has warned investors against boycotting of the legitimate official channels which is his office to avoid being duped by fraudsters.  

Chinese storekeeper in court in Sierra Leone

One Chi Shu Laing, 44, a storekeeper, has appeared before Supreme Court Judge, Justice Alusine Sesay in Freetown for an offence of wounding with intent.

Laing was arraigned in court during the September call over for the start of the criminal session. The storekeeper was said to have wounded two other Chinese Nationals, one Tan Lee and Zhang Hun on the 31st January 2021. The 42 year old man pleaded guilty to the charges. 

Justice Sesay requested for the two complainants in court.

Councilor on the run for vandalizing state property

The Sierra Leone Police have declared wanted, Councilor Ibrahim Sankoh of Ward 239 constituency 077 Masoila Lungi who is suspected of involvement in the vandalizing of solar street lights that were commissioned at different locations within Lungi.
