Labourer gets 10 years for manslaughter

Justice John Bosco Allieu has sentenced a 43-year-old labourer, Augustine Sannoh to 10 years imprisonment for the unlawful killing of Foday Bangura at Pepper Wharf, Tombo Village in the Western Area Rural District .

The State Prosecutor led in a total of five witnesses who testified against the man.

Desmond Conteh, a Police investigator attached to the Tombo Police Station said that he was at work when a certain Hassan brought Sannoh on allegations that he has killed someone at Pepper Wharf, Tombo Village.

Sierra Leone removes import duty on liquefied petroleum gas

The government of Sierra Leone has decided to remove duty cost on imported liquefied petroleum gas, a disclosure that was made by Minister of Finance, Dr. Dennis Vandi during his presentation in the House of Parliament, of the country’s new budget for 2022, on Friday 19 November this year.

The move is likely to see a reduction in the price of the liquefied product that would attract more users of cooking gas. Also this could contribute in discouraging the use of charcoal for cooking, thereby reducing deforestation.

Seven fire outbreaks in Sierra Leone capital in one week -says NDMA

The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has in a press release issued on Friday 19th November, said that they have noticed ‘sporadic fire outbreaks’ within the Freetown municipality recently.

It noted that between November 15th and 19th alone, they recorded seven fire incidents reported that left at least one dead and properties worth millions of Leones destroyed.

Sierra Leone to withhold fees and salaries of public officials who fail to implement Audit Recommendations

In an effort to implement the recommendations in the Auditor General’s Report, the Minister of Finance, Dr. Dennis K. Vandi, says parliament has approved the withholding of the remuneration, fees and salaries of those  officials who fail to respond or implement the audit recommendations, effective January, 2022.  

He said this while presenting the 2022 annual budget to Members of Parliament on Friday 19th November, 2021.

$94 Million road project for Kono, eastern Sierra Leone

President Julius Maada Bio has officially commissioned the construction of the Sefadu - Kamiendor - Guinea Border Road, and handed over the project to the construction company Guico Pres (SL) Ltd. at a ceremony held on Saturday, November 20, 2021 at Jagbama Fiama in Kono District, East of Sierra Leone. 

In his statement, President Bio noted that the project is a fulfillment of a promise made by the past government but was not honoured. 

Sierra Leone boosts private sector in agriculture

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Dennies K.Vandy, has on Friday 19th November 2021 informed members of parliament that cabinet has approved the role of the private sector in the procurement and distribution of agricultural inputs with the objective of achieving food security in the country.

He disclosed this in the well of parliament while presenting the 2022 government budget for the authorization of expenditure from the Consolidated Fund for the Service of Sierra Leone and for other related matters.

Sierra Leonean to tackle Africa’s conflicts

With old conflicts raging and new ones emerging in Africa, plus the return of military coups, the African Union has appointed a Sierra Leonean, Dr. Alhaji Sarjoh Bah as its Director of Conflict Management within the Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS) Department. With this appointment, Dr Bah will be in charge of managing peace, security and stability across the continent.
