By Mohamed Foday Conteh

The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has in a press release issued on Friday 19th November, said that they have noticed ‘sporadic fire outbreaks’ within the Freetown municipality recently.

It noted that between November 15th and 19th alone, they recorded seven fire incidents reported that left at least one dead and properties worth millions of Leones destroyed.

The affected areas according to the statement include the Aberdeen Creek Ranger Street, Turay Drive-Juba Hills, Government Wharf, Janet Lane-Kingtom, Culvert Community-Kissy and Kissy Dockyard.

The Agency noted that the fire incidents have affected over a hundred people in those communities across Freetown.

It added that all the incidents recorded are in dwelling homes for which they are concerned.

It therefore admonished citizens to switch off all electrical appliances before going to bed or when leaving home. They also advised that people hire professional electricians to do their installations and avoid illegal connections.

In an earlier interview with Politico, the Fire Chief at the Aberdeen Station, Foday Kamara said that fire accidents are more common in the dry season than the rainy season. He said they have activated their alertness in to respond to emergencies.
