Date out for two Parliamentary Bye-elections

Saturday 26th March 2022 is the date scheduled for the holding of two by-elections for the vacant seats in parliament, following the passing away of two members of the house.  

Aloysius Bockarie Ansumana of Constituency 005 in Kailahun district and Ahmed samba Turay who represented Constituency 073 in Port Loko District died on the 7th and 10th January this year, respectively. 

Traders along Jui-Regent road cleared off again

Traders along the Hastings/Grafton highway have expressed concerns over the manner in which their business places were destroyed.

A trader along Kossoh Town Amira Kabia explained that they were not informed or warned before the demolition. “They said this is just a warning and that they will be back on Saturday,” she claimed.

Political party youth promise “responsible” social media use

In a debate conducted for youths representing the 17 political parties in the country on the topic: “The role of political parties in promoting responsible use of social media among young people”, representatives of the various political parties promised a responsible use of social media among their members to promote peace and development and avert chaos in the country.  

Chief Minister commends All Petroleum Product

Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, Jacob Jusu Saffa has commended the oil marketing company, All Petroleum Product (APP) for investing “huge” capital in the country’s Oil and Gas industry.

 He made this commendation during a conducted tour of the Kissy Oil Refinery in Freetown together with the Petroleum Regulatory Agency (PRA) Executive Chairman, Dr. Brima Baluwa Koroma, and other government ministers on the 19th January 2022.

1,500 hectares cultivated in year one of rice project

The Regional Rice Value Chain Project (RRVCP) in its first planting season cultivated 1000   hectares of rice at Tomabum and 500 hectares at both Mambolo and Samu in the south and north of the country, respectively. The Project Coordinator, Abdulai Bun Wai made the disclosure at a meeting of Stakeholders in Bo to discuss plans for the project’s next planting season. It is an ambitious move by the present central government to reduce its overreliance on the importation of rice to the country by private business entities.

Leone Stars take dignified exit

The country’s national football team, Leone Stars finally bowed out of the AfCON tournament after a spirited performance in their last group stage match against Equatorial Guinea played at the Omnisport Stadium in Limbe, Cameroon on Thursday 20th January 2022. Pablo Ganet scored what turned out to be the only goal of the match.

50% more fire in 2021

Reported fire cases in Sierra Leone increased by 50% in 2021, according to the Chief Fire Officer Nazir Ahmad Kamanda Bongay, doubling the 2020 figures.

Speaking to Politico on Tuesday 19th January 2022, Bongay explained that in the year 2021 the country recorded more than one thousand fire cases, as against some five hundred reported incidents for 2020.
