By Politico staff writer

Saturday 26th March 2022 is the date scheduled for the holding of two by-elections for the vacant seats in parliament, following the passing away of two members of the house.

Aloysius Bockarie Ansumana of Constituency 005 in Kailahun district and Ahmed samba Turay who represented Constituency 073 in Port Loko District died on the 7th and 10th January this year, respectively.

The Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) in a press release also announced Sunday 16th to Monday 17th February 2022 as the stipulated period for nomination of candidates to be held at the respective district offices of the commission.

According to ECSL, the deadline for submission of the list of endorsed candidates by political parties is Tuesday 15th February. Approved candidates are to pay to the commission’s District Returning Officers the sum of Ten Million Leones each.

The commission says it will conduct the two bye-elections in accordance with the approved COVID-19 guidelines by NaCOVERC.

It’s not yet clear which of the country’s seventeen political parties will file in candidates for those two vacant parliamentary seats.
