No referendum in Sierra Leone before 2023 elections

The presidential governance adviser, Emmanuel Gaima, says there will be no referendum to amend the country’s constitution before or during the 2023 elections.

He was speaking to Politico on the next steps, following the launch of the White Paper on the recommendations of the Constitutional Review Committee. 

Poro society, a security threat to eastern Sierra Leone

The Provincial Security Coordinator East, Office of National Security (ONS) Mustapha Bornie has cited men’s secret Poro Society as one of the current security challenges in the region.

Bonnie told Politico that there are some areas that can be considered as prone to security breaches in the region especially Kenema city and some villages where the society has been reportedly used by some of its members to intimidate non- society individuals.

DSTI engages pupils on digital learning App

The Directorate of Science Technology and Innovation (DSTI) in partnership with UNICEF has on the 12th February 2022 trained  Secondary School pupils on the use of the newly launched digital learning platform; the Sierra Leone Learning Passport.

The platform is designed to help pupils in public examination classes’ access past questions and other learning materials through their mobile phones with or without internet service.

Sierra Leone president to meet new German Chancellor.

President Julius Maada Bio is due to meet the new German Chancellor Olaf Scholz who took office in December last year.

 According to the Sierra Leone embassy in Germany following a request by President Bio to meet the new Chancellor, the German government responded by assuring the embassy that the Chancellor would avail himself for a spontaneous meeting with  President Bio in Brussels.

 The two leaders would meet on the margins of the EU-AU Partnership Summit which is scheduled to take place in Brussels, the Kingdom of Belgium from 17th -18th February 2022.

Chris Kamara faces Ethics Board investigation

The General Secretary of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) Chris Kamara has been suspended from office for 14 days for what the Ethics Board of the association says are his actions that have prevented or obstructed the activities of the board.

A letter from the board dated 11th February, 2022 and addressed to Kamara, accused him of breaching provisions of the Ethics Code and Regulations and demanded a written explanation from him within 72 hours.
