Suahilo Koroma enters Bo mayoral race

A former Member of Parliament from Bo district has unveiled his “10 point plan to make Bo city a better place”. Speaking at a media cocktail in Bo, Hon Sualiho Koroma said he would work to “extend the colonial boundaries of Bo City to accommodate the current growth and development trajectory, improve revenue generation through the use of data and technology, promote a green environment and sustainable growth in specific areas including waste management and pollution control and climate change mitigation”.

Calls to end infighting at Rokel Commercial Bank

A coalition of Civil Society Organizations, known as the National Consortium on Public Accountability and their partners say their investigations have revealed that Rokel Commercial Bank is “grossly divided amongst two factions along political lines” and between the old folks and the new staff which if not immediately settled by the Board of Directors and the government “will have the tendency to wreck that noble revenue generating entity”.

As the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) boss recently announced dates for the 2023 General Elections, major political parties in Sierra Leone are bracing up to ensure that they conduct both their lower level and national delegates conferences before the campaign period can be officially declared.

The Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) in turn is actively working towards ensuring that standards are set on which political parties to abide by, before going into the 2023 General Elections.

RSPO goes back on its certification to Socfin

The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) has issued a statement admitting that in January 2022 it certified Socfin Agricultural Company (SAC), an agro-based industry in Sierra Leone that engages primarily on palm oil production.

The company’s operations have been marred by numerous land conflicts, claims of human right abuses by rights defenders, and grievances by people in surrounding villages about its operational effects related to   pollution and other forms of environmental harm.

Audit Tribunal lacks jurisdiction – Defence lawyer

Rolland Wright, lawyer for the suspended Auditor General says the tribunal set up to try his client lacks jurisdiction to do so.

Lara Taylor-Pearce and her deputy, Tamba Momoh were suspended in November by President Julius Maada Bio on allegations of misconduct and the lack of professional performance. Allegations they both vehemently deny.

Massive child trafficking in the east of Sierra Leone

One-third of children between five and 17 years in the eastern province of Sierra Leone have experienced child trafficking, according to a new report.  

The report by the African Programming & Research Initiative to End Slavery (APRIES) at the University of Georgia's Center on Human Trafficking Research & Outreach (CenHTRO), says 36% others have experienced child labour.

ActionAid discusses strategic plan in Freetown
