Sierra Leone: Education minister warns against bribery for admission ahead of new academic year

The Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), Dr. David Sengeh, has urged parents of students who are to be admitted to secondary school in the coming academic year to desist from paying a bribe to have their kids gain admission. 

“Try to not bribe a school to gain admission. Do not pay, you will also be corrupt,” he cautioned, in one of his social media posts. 

Security sector urges public to ignore “faceless” protest

A Press Release from Sierra Leone’s Security Sector has assured citizens that the sector is in full control of the situation in the country and for them not to heed what it says are “calls for faceless demonstrations”.

Girl rights group leader, Makalay Sondai has expressed concern at the delay in the Police investigations over the death of a schoolgirl in Moyamba district, southern Sierra Leone.

She told Politico that since the death of Grace Lamboi aged 20 on the 7th of June this year, her organization Moonteen, and the family of the deceased, have been monitoring the police investigation of the matter that’s yet to be charged to court.

We have paid up to 90% of our field staff - Stats-SL

Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats-SL) has said in a statement that payments are being made to field staff that worked during the 2021 Mid-Term Population and Housing Census and have successfully completed and synched their data. 

“We have paid up to 90% of our field staff that has been verified using our server information,” a statement from Stats-SL, dated 5th August 2022, reads.

Stakeholders engaged to promote local writers

PEN Sierra Leone, a literacy advocacy group, has completed an engagement with stakeholders from the Curriculum and policy departments in the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), the Sierra Leone Library Board, and teachers from primary schools, writers, and publishers to discuss ways of promoting reading and writing in the country.
