RAIC launches Annual Report

The Right to Access Information Commission (RAIC) on Tuesday 3rd August 2022, launched its 2020 Annual Report. The report is the second of its kind launched since its establishment in October, 2014.

Medical doctor honored by fellow Chevening alumni in SIerra Leone

An Alumna of the UK Government-sponsored Chevening Scholarship Programme, Dr. Elizabeth Allieu, has been recognized by the programme’s Alumni Association of Sierra Leone for her contribution to the country’s health sector.

Dr. Allieu is the current Head of Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Acting Deputy Medical Superintendent at the Sierra Leone Psychiatric Teaching Hospital.

14 feared drowned in Sierra Leone

Two separate accidents happened at sea on Monday and Tuesday with 14 missing feared drowned.

According to the Acting Executive Director of the Sierra Leone Maritime Administration, Sama Gamanga, five drowned when a passenger boat named ENEMY SHAME, said to be without a manifest, collided with another boat named WASA BILA NGWOH with only crew members on board.

The former was going to Mattru Jong in Bonthe district while the latter was heading the opposite direction.

US to help protect Sierra Leone waters

 The Coast Guard Cutter of the United States (USCGC), Mohawk, made its way to Freetown during the weekend to visit the country's port in a bid to protect the Sierra Leonean waters.

 Part of the itinerary of the vessel’s visit includes embankment on a combined mission with officers from the Sierra Leone Maritime Committee and the Ministry of Fisheries, to safeguard the country's natural resources in the sea.

Sierra Leonean women insist on safe parliamentary seat

Following the removal of safe seats for women in the Public Election Act 2022 (PEA), women’s groups, female politicians, and other Civil Society Organisations have called for a review of the 1991 constitution in order to protect women’s rights and ensure that Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Bill which addresses the issue of a safe seat in all sector, becomes a success.

Three girls to accompany Sierra Leone education minister to New York

The Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), Dr. David Moinina Sengeh is set to include three students (all of them girls), as part of his delegation to the United Nations (UN) Transforming Education Summit Advisory Group to be held in New York.

One of the students came from the Ministry’s Youth Advisory Group and the other two were the top two female candidates in last year's Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for promotion to Senior Secondary Schools.
