Man remanded for wounding

Magistrate Isata Sellu Tucker of Pademba Road Court No.2 has remanded a man named Mustapha Fofana for allegedly wounding Abubakarr Turay, a taxi driver. 

Yesterday, 9th August 2022, the accused appeared in court to answer to a three-count charge of wounding with intent, wounding, and assault contrary to the laws of Sierra Leone.

The charge sheet stated that on Sunday 17th July 2022 at a Car Wash facility at Lumley in Freetown, the accused assaulted and maliciously wounded the complainant, Turay.

2 police witnesses testify in LAJ trial

The Prosecution in the matter between musicians Alhaji Amadu Bah aka LAJ and the State has presented for cross-examination by the Defense, of its fourth and fifth witnesses at the Magistrate Court No. 1, Pademba Road in Freetown.

LAJ was making his 14th appearance in court yesterday following his arrest and detention on 12 June 2022 on allegations that he violently carried out a robbery at the Leonco fuel station along Water Street during an altercation between his group of friends and the pump attendants.

Businesses still present infront of FSSG gate

Untidy sites of businesses continue around the fence and gate of the Freetown Secondary School for Girls (FSSG) in on Hannah Benka-Coker Street despite efforts by the school authorities to have them vacate the school premise.

After several calls for action on the situation, Politico understands that some weeks ago the Police and other authorities went to the area and ordered all business people including the rickshaw (kekeh) garage situated there to vacate the area with immediate effect.

Sierra Leone opposition divided over Sam-Sumana return

The leadership of the main opposition All People’s Congress party seems embroiled in controversy over the announcement of the return to the party of the expelled former Vice President, Samuel Sam-Sumana with some saying it is “null and void”.

A statement dated 4 August 2022 and issued on behalf of the party’s 21-member Interim Transition Governance Committee (ITGC) says Sam-Sumana has been brought back to the fold of the party in the interest of unity.

Doctors end strike in Sierra Leone

The President of Sierra Leone Medical and Dental Association (SLMDA), Dr. Edries Tejan, has confirmed to Politico that they were ending their indefinite strike action, saying it was “in the interest of the masses”.  The nationwide industrial action lasted for five days causing untold suffering to patients.

Dr Tejan said the Ministry of Health fulfilled about 80 percent of their previous agreement over better conditions of service and were now suspending their strike action.

Sierra Leone embassy disrupts student protest in Russia

The Sierra Leone embassy in Russia last week condemned and disrupted an attempted strike action by students studying in the Russian Federation at the Embassy in Moscow.

The Embassy noted that since strike actions staged by students were always marred by disorderly behavior, they immediately contacted the law enforcement agency through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia to be aware of it.

Sierra Leoneans complain of high electricity tariffs

Consumers of electricity supply have complained over what they say is the increase in tariffs by the Electricity Distribution and Supply Agency (EDSA)

People are of the opinion that there would be a drop in tariffs following the recent slight fall in the pump price of fuel.
