Sierra Leone president says August 10 protests were a planned insurrection

President Julius Maada Bio has in an address to the nation described the violent protests of Wednesday, August 10 as a well-planned and financed insurrection that was executed with shocking brutality.

He made reference to the sabre-rattling by some politicians of making the country ungovernable, and of people on social media who identified themselves as APC Warriors, PPP and others that he said were determined to seize power even if it meant hundreds of people dying in the process.

Abacha Street, ECOWAS street traders decry demolition

Business people whose stalls were demolished along the busy Abacha and ECOWAS streets have cried for help from the government and other authorities concerned, saying that the action against them was unfair and unexpected.

The news of the demolition came in the morning hours of Friday 12th August 2022 after the widespread protests that occurred on the 10th of August this year in some parts of the country and mostly the eastern parts of the capital Freetown.

As Fuel pump price drops to NLe 18, gas stations close

The Petroleum Regulatory Agency on Thursday 11th August 2022 announced a reduction in the pump price of petroleum products across Sierra Leone from NLE 19 to NLE 18.

However, commercial drivers have complained that fuel dealers have refused to sell since the announcement.

“They have fuel, they are just being wicked because the government has announced a reduction in the pump price to Le 18. The government needs to monitor these people,” said Mohamed Barrie, a rickshaw driver.

UN rep wants youths at the heart of Sierra Leone’s development

The United Nations Resident Coordinator for Sierra Leone, Babatunde Ahonsi, has called on the government of Sierra Leone to place the youths and young people at the front and centre of national development in other to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He made this call at the commemoration of International Youth Day, at the Freetown International Conference Centre, on Friday 12 August 2022, with the theme ‘ Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World For All Ages.’

Nigeria High Commission cautions Nigerians living in Sierra Leone

The Nigerian High Commission in Sierra Leone has cautioned all its citizens in Sierra Leone to maintain calm and restraints as they observe the current unrest in the country which is a result of the August 10th riot in some parts of the country including the eastern part of the capital Freetown leading to the death of civilians and police officers.
