$40m World Bank Windfall for Sierra Leone’s Small/Medium Enterprises

Sierra Leone’s Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are to benefit from a $ 40 million grant from the World Bank as support towards investment and growth. The grant is expected to contribute to the country’s Economic Diversification Project by strengthening businesses, enhancing reforms and competitiveness, and building the capacity of private sector operators and public institutions.

It specifically targets non-productive mining sectors.

Sierra Leone Standards Bureau engages CTC in efforts to enhance fair trade

The Sierra Leone Standards Bureau (SLSB) on Wednesday held a meeting with the management of the Commodities Trading Company (CTC) Limited, one of the leading importers of Sierra Leone’s staple food - rice.  

The objective of the engagement with the management of the company, according to the Bureau, was to explain the rationale and essence of the current "fairness-in-trade" drive to ensure that the buying public gets value for their money for "all goods and services.

COVID-19 hinders growth and prospects of girls’ education in Sierra Leone - World Bank

The COVID-19 pandemic is having a significant impact on Sierra Leone’s medium-term growth prospects, with the economy projected to contract by 2.3 to 4.0 percent in 2020 due to disruption in global trade, travel restrictions and domestic restrictions on mobility, a new World Bank report shows.

The report launched recently in Freetown notes that the fiscal and current account deficits were expected to increase due to increased crisis-related spending, while inflation is also expected to rise. 

Sierra Leone Pharmacy Board seeks to reclaim authority over advertising

The Pharmacy Board of Sierra Leone (PBSL) has called on the media to desist from publishing or airing advertisement of pharmaceutical products without its authorization.

The warning issued recently came through a statement from the Independent Media Commission (IMC), which said that the PBSL raised the concern amidst proliferation of pharmaceutical products and unchecked advertisement by both the print and electronic media.

YAD on Covid-19 sensitization and support to vulnerable households in Konjo, eastern Sierra Leone

Youth in Action for Development on 30th July launched a community-based sensitization campaign against Covid-19 and distributed food and non-food items to Konjo Buima community, Malegohun chiefdom, Kenema district.

The campaign entails mainly a vivid explanation on how the rural dwellers can prevent themselves from Covid-19 and how to adopt such preventive practices into their everyday lives.
