Sierra Leone Covid19 response steps up community engagement

The latest spike in the number of recorded COVID -19 cases in the Western Area of the country has prompted NACOVERC workers to embark on community outreach within Freetown and its environs.

During the awareness and sensitization sessions, the team also distributed free face masks to people in public places and communities such as PZ, Cong Cross, Cotton Tree, Wellington, Jui and Lumley.   The team comprised Risk Communications and Social Mobilisation experts and they went to densely populated settlements in Dwazark, Rokupa, Portee, Up-gun, Ferry Junction and Calaba town.

ACC Indicts Two Civil Aviation Staff

The Anti-Corruption Commission has indicted Julian Clarke and Sallieu Kargbo of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority on various corruption offences.

A press statement published by the Commission revealed that the two were indicted on a total of Nine counts of corruption offences bordering on Abuse of Office, contrary to Section 42 (1), Deceiving a Principal, contrary to Section 40 (1), and Conspiracy to Commit a Corruption Offence, contrary to Section 128 (1), of the Anti-Corruption Act, No. 12 of 2008 as Amended by the Anti-Corruption Act No. 9 of 2019.

University lecturers end strike in Sierra Leone

The long drawn-out strike action by the academic staff of all three public universities in Sierra Leone has been called off after President Julius Maada Bio, his Vice President Dr Juldeh Jalloh and other senior government officials held a closed-door meeting with representatives of the striking lecturers at State House yesterday, 2nd February 2021.

Classes are expected to resume today.

MRU optimistic about Sierra Leone, Guinea impasse

The Mano River Union Secretary General, Ambassador Madina Wesseh has expressed optimism for a permanent resolution of the impasse between two of its member countries, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

It followed her visit to the disputed border town of Yenga, which is one of two sticky points between the two countries, the border closure by Conakry being the other.

High Court slams Bank of Sierra Leone for wrongful dismissal of staff

Justice Sengu Koroma, presiding at the Industrial and Social Security division of the High Court in Freetown has ruled that the Bank of Sierra Leone was wrong in their dismissal of one Patrick Massaquoi in May of 2019.

Delivering his judgment on Monday 1st February 2021, Justice Koroma noted that the defendant (Bank of Sierra Leone) was liable to the Plaintiff for wrongful dismissal for which a payment plan has been ordered in respect of damages for the wrongful dismissal of the former security guard.

RAIC Engages Stakeholders

Five Pilot Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) have presented inventories of datasets aligned with various key SDGs held by their ministries at a one-day result-sharing conference organised by the Right to Access Information Commission (RAIC).

The event which took place on Thursday 28th January 2021 at the Family Kingdom Resort in Freetown was supported by the Wold Bank.
