Sierra Leone Covid19 response steps up community engagement

  • Brig (Rtd) Kellie Conteh, Covid-19 chief

The latest spike in the number of recorded COVID -19 cases in the Western Area of the country has prompted NACOVERC workers to embark on community outreach within Freetown and its environs.

During the awareness and sensitization sessions, the team also distributed free face masks to people in public places and communities such as PZ, Cong Cross, Cotton Tree, Wellington, Jui and Lumley.   The team comprised Risk Communications and Social Mobilisation experts and they went to densely populated settlements in Dwazark, Rokupa, Portee, Up-gun, Ferry Junction and Calaba town.

At some points along busy streets, the team gave masks to commuters, motorists as well as tricycle (Kekeh) and commercial bike riders, petty traders and shopkeepers. In all the places reached, the NaCOVERC workers transmitted messages about the importance of wearing mask and complying with other preventive measures against the pandemic.

Since the first reported case of the virus in Sierra Leone in March last year, the country has so far recorded 3,699 cases. Of this number 79 people have died and 2,377 having recovered. 560 are still in quarantine undergoing treatment. Urban Freetown accounts for 2,074 of the cases so far.

The city and the rest of the Western Area are in the second week of a lockdown from the rest of the country. There is also a two- week nationwide 10pm to 5am curfew.
