Civil society concerned over delayed review of Sierra Leone mining law

A coalition of Civil Society Organizations working in the rights and minerals sector has expressed dissatisfaction over what it described as a “snail pace” manner in which the review processes of the 2009 Mines and Minerals Development Act has been going.

The coalition known as the Natural Resource Governance and Economic Justice-Network (NaRGEJ) also noted that the review process has not garnered the much needed public consultations that can make the document to be owned by the people of Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone police seize 100s of military uniforms

Police have seized hundreds of assorted military uniforms and other paraphernalia that were shipped into the country and went past through the Queen Elizabeth Quay.

The Director of the Criminal Investigations Department, Superintendent Richard PG Roberts says six people have been arrested following the seizure of the varying quantities of military uniforms at Percival Street in Freetown.

He told Politico that the items were discovered in a garage, after police had acted on a tipoff.

Sierra Leone confiscates houses of former state officials

Three senior officials in the previous All Peoples Congress (APC) government, two of them already deceased, have had their properties confiscated and forfeited to the state. This was contained in a statement from the Office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice dated 28 July 2021.  The move was as a result of an order by a Government White Paper in the wake of three Commissions of Inquiry that the present SLPP government instituted to look into the stewardship of the past regime.

196 schools failed NPSE

Analysis of the results of the just released National Primary School Examination, (NPSE) by the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education has revealed that a total of 196 schools across the country got a zero percent pass rate in the exam out of a total of 4,296 (four thousand two hundred and ninety-six) schools with 25 from neighbouring Guinea.

Police discover stolen FQE materials

Assistant Inspector General of Police Amadu Mannah has told journalists at a press conference in Freetown that a vehicle with registration number AOJ 544 headed for Conakry, Guinea was intercepted at Mile 38 with piles of various school materials.  He said the vehicle which was driven by Ishmael Kamara was heading to Conakry.
