By Nasratu Kargbo

Assistant Inspector General of Police Amadu Mannah has told journalists at a press conference in Freetown that a vehicle with registration number AOJ 544 headed for Conakry, Guinea was intercepted at Mile 38 with piles of various school materials.  He said the vehicle which was driven by Ishmael Kamara was heading to Conakry.

He explained to journalists at the Police headquarters that the driver named Ishmael Kamara was taken into custody after it was discovered the items were those meant for use by school children in the Free Quality Education Programme.

The Police found packets of different Free Quality Education materials that included packets of Alphabet text books, My Picture books, quantities of various other text books in subjects such as Primary Science for Sierra Leone, Mathematics and Primary English all of which totaled 278 packets.

In an unrelated matter, AIG Mannah said the rate at which vehicles are stolen is on the increase, and revealed that the Police caught two vehicles heading for Conakry. They were caught at the Gbalamuya highway. He stated that the vehicles are presently with the Police but did not give further details so as not to jeopardize the ongoing investigations.

Mannah said they have invited many car dealers and informed them about the number of cases of car theft and fraudulent car transaction, which according to him would make the car dealers very unpopular.  Many people he went on, will not have confidence in buying cars on the streets.

As a way to curb this menace, the AIG explained that the car dealers should create a professional car dealers association that has a responsible leadership. He believed having such a leadership in place will see the introduction of many strategies to curtail those fraudulent activities related to car transactions.

He advised buyers to beware of fraudsters, he said it was for that reason the Police published a statement advising the general public to make sure they get all witnesses and all necessary documents before completing any vehicle transaction.
