Journalists urged to change transitional justice reporting

The National Coordinator for the Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG), Dr. Francis Sowa has urged media practitioners to change the narrative on transitional justice reporting.

He made this statement during the launch of a handbook for media practitioners in West Africa, at the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) Headquarters in Freetown, an initiative that was funded by the Africa Transitional Justice Legacy Fund (ATJLF).

SLeCAD calls for a review of banking restrictions

The Sierra Leone Chamber for Agribusiness Development (SLeCAD) has called on the Sierra Leone Central Bank and the government to review the current banking restrictions to boost businesses and enhance economic growth.

 A statement by SLeCAD says the lack of access to finance and the denomination of the Leone including the cash withdrawal limits from banks are affecting the business sector across the country.

Calls for actors to support breastfeeding

Suspected food poisoning leaves 1 dead, 81 admitted in eastern Sierra Leone

A 1-year-old girl has died and 81 other people, mostly children, have been admitted to the Kenema Government Hospital after a suspected incident of food poisoning, hospital sources have confirmed. They all attended the graduation party of a nursery pupil who’d made it to primary school. 

Those hospitalized had either become unconscious or complained of some illness. The deceased, who also attended the party, was said to have died at home and not at the hospital

Major investor challenges Sierra Leone’s landmark land bill

An official of the giant oil palm producing company, Socfin, says the new Customary Land Rights Bill which is before Parliament, will make foreign investment in agriculture totally impossible when it becomes fully operational.

Witness explains how FGM initiate met her death in Sierra Leone

The first prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of a woman engaged in the practice of female genital mutilation (or Sowei) has testified in court explaining how an initiate died shortly after she had undergone the procedure.

The Sowei, Sowo Sandy, is accused of the manslaughter of the initiate, Maseray Sei, a 21-year-old mother of two.

Uncertainty over women's safe seat in Sierra Leone parliament

The much-talked-about safe seats for women has finally been expunged from the Public Elections Act 2022 following the week-long debate on the bill. The decision was made on the 27th of July 2022 after long hours of closed-door consultation with the Leadership of parliament and the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mohamed Lamin Tarawalley and other stakeholders.
