14 feared drowned in Sierra Leone

  • Sama Gamanga, Ag ED of Maritime Administration

Two separate accidents happened at sea on Monday and Tuesday with 14 missing feared drowned.

According to the Acting Executive Director of the Sierra Leone Maritime Administration, Sama Gamanga, five drowned when a passenger boat named ENEMY SHAME, said to be without a manifest, collided with another boat named WASA BILA NGWOH with only crew members on board.

The former was going to Mattru Jong in Bonthe district while the latter was heading the opposite direction.

Gamanga said the accident took place at a blind curve at sea around Mosembo Village near Mattru Jong.

In a separate incident, dozens of people were involved in sea accident around 5pm on Tuesday between Jui and Tagrin off the coast of Freetown.

Minister of Fisheries, Emma Kowa-Jalloh told Politico that a fishing trawler that had been at sea for weeks was heading back to Jui. She said nine others were missing, feared dead.

She said the lack of a jetty in Freetown for trawlers meant that smaller boats would come to take the passengers and the fish to shore.

She said once the boat arrived, the workers onboard the trawler disembarked en masse and overloaded the boat which then capsized.

Mrs Kowa-Jalloh said a file has been prepared with the photos and other details of the deceased compiled.
