Sierra Leone stiffens penalty for human traffickers

The Minister of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs, Baindu Dasama during the Ministry of Information and Communications weekly press briefing noted that a minimum of 25 years custodial sentence has been provided for persons convicted for the offence of human trafficking.

She made this disclosure while popularizing the Anti-Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Act, 2022 (Act Number 12 2022). The new law replaces the Anti-Human Trafficking Act of 2015.

Free Cleft Palates Surgery commences in eastern Kenema

The Kenema Government Hospital together with a Medical team from Nigeria have commenced free cleft palate surgery on children that have been suffering from the condition.

People from Kabala, Port Loko in Kafu Bullon chiefdom, and other parts of the country including neighboring Guinea and Liberia will benefit from the service.

MBSSE, UNICEF train school leaders in east

Three-day intensive training of school leaders and stakeholders in the Eastern region ends today in Kenema.

According to the District Officer, Western Area Alphious Moinina Kamara, the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MBSSE) and its partners have discovered that there are many violations taking place in the school system.

He said every teacher is expected to know the code of conduct and its penalty for violators.

4 years in jail for stealing zinc

One Alimamy Conteh, convicted of stealing corrugated zinc sheets has been sentenced to 4 years and 11 months imprisonment.

Conteh was found guilty by Magistrate Hadiru Daboh of Ross Road Court No. 3 in Freetown. He was said to have conspired with a man named Borboh to steal 50 pieces of the zinc at Mamba Ridge Kissy, Freetown on the 28th of October 2021. The stolen items were valued at 1,500,000 old Leone.

Youths want to participate in peace-building

Sierra Leonean youth activists have called on Government to provide an open space for youth participation in national peace building processes.

They made this plea at a panel discussion to mark International Youth Day, at the Freetown International Conference Centre on Friday 12th August, 2022.

A member of the panel, Alex Nallo Jr.  said since independence ,not much has changed in terms of development, irrespective of who has been in power.

NDMA boosts windstorm victims in southern Sierra Leone

Over five hundred people who are victims of May’s windstorm in Bo district, southern Sierra Leone on Wednesday 17th August 2022 received food and other items from the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) with support from the Latter Day Saints.

President for Latter-Day Saints, Victor K. Hindowa said when the windstorm happened on May 4 this year, the Bo District Council called on partners to do an assessment of the scale of damage.

Sierra Leone’s president meets tribal leaders in aftermath of deadly protests

Following the August 10 violence that claimed the lives of civilians and Police Officers, President Julius Maada Bio yesterday engaged Tribal Headmen in the Western Area and Paramount Chiefs in separate meetings to discuss their role in the government’s effort at consolidating the country’s peace and democracy.    

In his statement, President Bio said he was pleased to meet the traditional rulers at State House to engage them on various issues, especially about last week’s riots.
