Sierra Leone confirms 31 deaths in violent 10 August protests

An internal document obtained by Politico shows that 31 people were killed during the violent antigovernment protests on 10 August in parts of Freetown and the north, up from the 27 that was earlier reported.

25 of them were civilians and six were policemen, with the youngest being nine years old and the oldest 67.

They are believed to be the highest police and civilian protest-related casualties in a single day in peacetime Sierra Leone. Four of the deaths were females.

US Peace Corps volunteers return to Sierra Leone

Ahead of the official swearing-in and dispatching of 17 Peace Corps Volunteers, the American Ambassador to Sierra Leone has expressed joy that the volunteers have returned to the country to support the community with Health Care and Primary and Secondary Education Services.

Ambassador David Reimer noted that after the swearing-in ceremony, they will be sent into communities across eight districts in Sierra Leone to work together with local partners on health and education.

Plans to depoliticize Parliamentary Clerk’s office in Sierra Leone

The Parliamentary Director for Programmes, Research, and Partnership, Gilbert Nhabay has spoken about an initiative to get the Clerk’s Office to become independent by depoliticizing it.

Speaking during a Parliament and Press Gallery Engagement Forum, Nhabay noted that they want to make the office independent so its work can be effective.

He said the position of a clerk not being a political appointee comes with a lot of merits as it is done in other countries.

Council Chairman calls for swift action over Bumpeh Bridge collapse

The Chairman of the Bonthe district Council has called on the government to address the current impassable state at the Bumpeh Bridge leading to the chiefdom headquarter town of Bumpeh Ngao (Tabay) within the shortest possible time, noting the economic standstill it has caused.

A low-bed trailer truck carrying road construction machinery was reported to have broken down on the narrow bridge in the early hours of Thursday morning, as it was trying to drive through, thereby rendering vehicular and human traffic impossible.
