18 prisoners test positive for Covid-19 in Sierra Leone's central prison

Eighteen prisoners have tested positive for the Coronavirus disease, prison authorities have confirmed to Politico.

The cases, according to the Sierra Leone Correctional Services (SLCS), were all direct or indirect contacts of Case 90, which was confirmed at the end of April.

Case 90 tested positive while on remand at the Pademba Road Prison. He was in the health facility of the prison.

“Ritual murder” in southern Sierra Leone

The police in Bo say they are investigating a suspected incident of ritual killing which has left the small community of Gerahun Town, where the incident occurred, perplexed.

Gerahun Town is located in Baoma Chiedom.

The body of the victim was been found with parts of it mutilated in what police say appears to be a ritual style killing. The deceased has been identified by the Police as Moseray. A Police spokesman told Politico that the killing was not reported.

Freetown residents complain of low voltage power

Residents of a section of Wellington called Magnus have complained about fluctuation in voltage in the power supplied by the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA), which they say is causing damages to their appliances.

Wellington, which is in Constituency 115, is an industrial estate and it is host to several factories. Some of the residents believe that their experience with the power supply is linked to the fact that they share power lines with the factories.

Sierra Leone orders inquiry into Maritime Administration

President Julius Maada Bio has ordered an Administrative Inquiry into the activities of the Sierra Leone Maritime Administration (SLMA).

Eight top officials, including the Deputy Executive Director, Festus Crosbie, have been suspended to pave way for the investigation, according to a letter from the presidency last week ordering the move. The letter dated May 19 and signed by Secretary to the President, Julius Sandy, was addressed to the Board Chairman of the Authority.

Sierra Leone president assures civil society of continued dialogue

President Julius Maada Bio has assured Civil Society Organizations in Sierra Leone of a continued engagement and dialogue on national issues.

President Bio made this commitment at a meeting held last week at State House, with the goal of having a close discussion on recent national issues including the Corona Virus Disease.

Quarantined residents attempt to break out in southern Sierra Leone

Quarantined residents in two locations in Bo attempted to break out on Sunday amidst complained of prolonged confinement.

The residents were angry that after spending about a month in quarantine, the authorities have still not given them any update on their swab results.

The first incident occurred at the Two Stars Hotel where the residents made their second attempt to break out of quarantine in just one month.

The second incident happened 30 minutes later at Sir Milton Hotel.
