Sierra Leone names new elections chief

President Julius Maada Bio has appointed Mohamed Konneh, a financial crime investigation expert, as head of the National Electoral Commission (NEC).

Mr Konneh was named in a press statement issued on Monday. The statement signed by Presidential Secretary Dr Julius Sandy, said the appointment is subject to parliamentary approval.

Sierra Leone child advocate calls for community library

Child advocate, Makalay Saidiatu Sonda is calling for support to get a community library for children in Kori Chiefdom in the Southern district of Moyamba.

Mrs Sonda is the Founder and Director of a child advocacy group, Moonteen, a community-based organisation which focuses on the education of teenagers and adolescent boys and girls, with programmes in mentoring and teaching of reproductive health in schools.

Fullas demand an apology from Lands Minister

The Fulla Tribal Administration, Western Area has demanded for an apology from the Minister of Lands and Country Planning, Dr. Denis Sandy for publicly accusing their Youth leader, Chernor Issa Jalloh of attempting to harm him using black magic.

In a video on social media last week, Dr Sandy alleges that Mr. Jalloh went to his ministry to attack him with some black magic in a bid to kill him.

Sierra Leone announces new dates for WAEC public exams

The Ministry of Basic and Senior School Education and the West Africa Examinations Council have agreed new dates for the three public examinations, both have confirmed to Politico.

The minister, Dr Moinina Sengeh says the National Primary School Examination (NPSE) will take place 3 August and while the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will start on the 14 September which will last for between and 10 days including weekends.

All freed in Fourah Bay College murder case

An eleven-member jury has unanimously returned a “not guilty” verdict in a two-count charge of conspiracy to commit murder and murder as laid in the indictment against six members of the Klymax Club of Fourah Bay College.

All six accused persons – Francis Mafinda, Dennis Holland, Lawrence Lahai Amara, Abassie Sesay, Mukeh Foh and David Williams – were standing trial before Justice Ivan Ansumana Sesay of the high court in Freetown.

Word Bank approves $30 million for agriculture in Sierra Leone

World Bank has approved a US$30 million grant for Sierra Leone to support agricultural productivity and access to markets for small holder farmer agribusinesses.

The US$30 million fund is from the International Development Association to the Smallholder Commercialization and Agribusiness Development Project (SCADeP).
