Local contractor to implement Transform Freetown project

The Ministry of Transport and Aviation has contracted PAVIFORT AL-Ayhanlar Holdings JV, a local construction company, for the implementation of part of a project designed for the improvement on roads, intersections and traffic signalizations in the Western Urban.

The contract is under the Integrated and Resilient Urban Mobility Project (IRUMP) implemented by the Ministry. The World Bank funded project costing US$50million was signed in July 2019, to be implemented in five years.

ACC launches taskforce to combat exams malpractice in Sierra Leone

In a bid to clamp down on examination malpractice, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Sierra Leone has launched a taskforce to monitor public examinations conducted by the West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC).

The formation of the taskforce, according to a press statement from the anti-graft agency, was done in consultation with the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), following the signing of a communiqué on the 16th July, 2020.

Alpha Timbo Walks Free

Justice Cosmotina Jarrett of the High Court in Freetown has discharged the former Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Alpha Osman Timbo, and four others on a 15-count indictment of corruption and other related offences brought against them by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Delivering her ruling on Thursday, Justice Jarrett said the prosecution had failed to bring any evidence before the court against the accused persons and she was left with no alternative but to discharge the matter.

“Journalism will be better after this repeal” - SIerra Leone's Information Minister

Minister of Information and Communication, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, has told lawmakers in the House of Parliament that journalism in Sierra Leone will be better if they go ahead and repeal the criminal libel law from the country’s law book.

Swarray was addressing Members of Parliament on Thursday during the second reading of the bill to repeal Part 5 of the Public Order Act of 1965 which criminalizes libel.

Opposition calls for review of Sierra Leone's citizenship law

The leaders of the opposition National Grand Coalition (NGC) and All Peoples Congress (APC) parties in parliament have called for the review of the law on dual citizenship which bars Sierra Leoneans who are nationals of other countries from holding elected positions.

NGC leader Dr Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella said in the house on Thursday that the law on dual citizenship must be looked into to make sure that the country’s democracy is inclusive.
