Sierra Leone's aviation authorities engage to reopen airport

Preparations are in high gear ahead of the reopening of the Lungi International Airport.

President Julius Maada Bio last week announced Wednesday July 22 as date of the reopening of the airport, four months since it was shut down as part of measures to prevent the entry of Covid-19 into the country.

The president also announced the reopening of places of worship, among other moves geared towards relaxing restrictions and to open up the economy.

2nd Accused Testifies in Klymax Murder Trial in Sierra Leone

Dennis Holland, the 2nd accused in the on-going Klymax Fraternity murder trial, has testified before Justice Ivan Sesay at the High Court in Freetown.

In his evidence on Monday, the accused told the court that he was a student of Fourah Bay College studying Political Science between 2012 and 2016 and was an Associate Member of the fraternity, with the objective of helping and supporting their members in different situations.

18 -year old remanded for manslaughter

Justice Ivan Ansumana Sesay of the High Court in Freetown on Tuesday 14th July remanded in custody 18 year old Edward Conteh over the death of one Mohamed Lamin Sesay.

The prosecution alleges that Conteh, on the 16th April 2018 in Freetown, unlawfully killed Mohamed Lamin Sesay.

The accused, who was 16 at the time the alleged offence was committed, is facing a one count indictment of manslaughter. He is not represented by a lawyer.

COVID-19: New report exposes rights violations in Sierra Leone

A new report by the Center for Accountability and Rule of Law (CARL) has shed light on incidents of brutality perpetrated by security forces during implementation of some of the COVID-19 measures.

Executive Director of CARL, Ibrahim Tommy, revealed the findings in a press briefing on Friday. He said that the study, which covers just happenings in the month of May, is part of the “Support CARL COVID-19 Response” project that is sponsored by the Open Society Initiative for West Africa.

Congregational worship resumes in Sierra Leone

Three months after the imposition of a ban on congregational worship, Sierra Leoneans will effective today, Monday, July 13, be allowed to again gather in their places of worship.

President Julius Maada Bio made the announcement on Thursday, July 9, in the latest move aimed at relaxing Covid-19 measures to ease the economic and social effects on citizens.

COVID-19: New cases spark fears of community transmission in Pujehun

After going over a month without recording a new COVID-19 case in Pujehun district, the district have been pegged back after recording six new cases on Wednesday. The cases were found after a mass testing scheme that tested 101 construction workers of Senegalese company, CSE Construction.

All those who tested positive were found in the border town of Zimmi, Makpele Chiefdom. The District Coordinator of DICOVERC in Pujehun, Mohamed Kemokai told Politico that, “we fear that there might be community transmission.”
