Sierra Leone police boss warns riot police over excessive force

The Inspector General (IGP) of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), Ambrose Sovula, has warned the armed unit of the Sierra Leone Police, the Operations Support Division (OSD) to refrain from the use of excessive force in their response to riot and other violent situations.

The IGP made this statement whiles addressing a group of OSDs at their headquarters in Freetown on issues of their welfare and the review of the ranking structure of the force.

HRCSL blames Makeni riot on communication gap

A report by the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) on the July 17th and 18th violence in Makene, northern Sierra Leone, has blamed it on communication gap between the Mayor of the city, Sunkari Kabba-Kamara and other stakeholders.

MAN GETS 10 YEARS FOR SEXUAL PENETRATION

The sexual offences division of the High Court in Freetown has sentenced 21-year old Alpha Sesay to ten years in jail including the time he spent on remand. Sesay was found guilty of a one-count indictment of sexual penetration of a child below the age of 18.

Delivering his judgement on Monday 17th August 2020, Justice Momoh Jah Stevens noted that because the accused didn’t waste the court’s time by confessing to have engaged in the act of sexual penetration with the victim, he was handing down a minimum sentence.

8-year-old "rape victim" testifies in court

An 8-year old child whom prosecutors say was sexually penetrated by one Amadu Bah has testified before Justice Momoh Jah Stevens at the sexual offenses division of the High Court in Freetown.

In her testimony on Monday 17th August, the victim identified herself as a primary school pupil and currently in class two. She recalled that on the morning of 7th March 2020, she went to the bedroom of the accused who lives in the same compound with her family to watch a movie.

MAN REMANDED FOR SEXUAL PENETRATION

David Vandi alias Lahai who is facing a one-count indictment for sexual penetration has been arraigned before Justice Momoh Jah Stevens at the sexual offenses division of the High Court in Freetown and remanded in custody.

According to the prosecution the accused, on the 17th May 2020, in the Western Area of Freetown, sexually penetrated a minor under the age of 18.

Development ministry concludes 9th leg of decentralization tour

The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MOPED) has concluded its latest leg of an ongoing tour of the nation as part of efforts to decentralize ownership of the country’s Medium-Term National Development Plan.

The latest tour, according to a report from the Strategic Communications Unit in the Ministry of Information and Communication, took the entourage to Kenema and Kailahun, where the high profile government delegation urged the people to strive to own the plan.
