Student loan scheme policy validated in Sierra Leone

The Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Professor Aiah Gbakima, has joined other stakeholders in a-day long session to validate the draft Sierra Leone National Student Loan Scheme policy.

The document, according to officials, is the outcome of nationwide consultations, survey and sensitization ahead of the establishment of the student’s loan scheme. They said that it took the committee that was established to work on it four months to produce the draft policy.

Sierra Leone Parliament ready to enact code on breast milk substitute – Speaker

The Sierra Leone parliament is ready to adopt and legislate the code on breast milk substitute, which is currently under drafting, the Speaker of Parliament, Dr Abass Bundu, has assured.

Dr Bundu told officials seeking for the enactment of the law which seeks to regulate the marking of breast milk substitutes that as lawmakers they were committed to the country’s development, which he noted was tied to the health and wellbeing of its people.

Judge recommends promotion of police officer

Justice Monfred Sesay of the High Court in Freetown has in a court order directed to the Inspector- General of Police, recommended Detective Police Constable (DPC) 4013 Mohamed Jusu for promotion to the level of Assistant Superintendent of Police.

Justice Sesay made the recommendation while presiding over an ongoing criminal matter last Wednesday 4 November, involving the alleged murder of one Hajah Rosalyn Pabai by three accused persons who face a two-count indictment of conspiracy to murder and murder.

Man remanded for depositing human faeces inside a mosque

Magistrate Hannah Bonnie in Freetown has sent on remand one Berro Kabba, who’s alleged to have deposited human faeces inside a mosque on Wilkinson Road in Freetown.

The accused, a Guinean national, made his first appearance before Magistrate Bonnie on Wednesday 4th November, where he faces a two-count charge of insanitary and entering Sierra Leone without a valid travelling certificate.

UK envoy in Sierra Leone observes day in defence of media freedom

The British High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, Simon Mustard, recently held a small socially distanced breakfast to mark the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. The day was commemorated on the 2nd November.

Mr Mustard used the event he hosted at his resident in Freetown to showcase his government’s support for media freedom in the country.

Hannah Bockarie’s suspected killers acquitted and discharged after Sierra Leone teenager was raped, killed and dumped on a beach

The suspects in one of the most prickly cases of rape in Sierra Leone have been set free by the High Court.

The death of teenager, Hannah Bockarie in 2015 provoked public outrage and demonstrations, amidst calls for action against rising cases of rape in the country at the time. Ms Bockarie, a sex worker, was raped, murdered and her body dumped at the Aberdeen Beach, near Lumley.  

Women’s groups and rights campaigners took to the streets of Freetown to call for justice for her deaths.
