Sierra Leone MP apologises for calling parliament corrupt

Embattled Member of Parliament representing Constituency 003 in Kailahun District, Hindolo Gevao, has apologized to a Committee of Parliament as contained in a recorded audio that has circulated on social media.

Gevao had earlier been suspended from the Chairmanship of the Legislative Committee of Parliament after he reportedly confirmed on a BBC radio interview claims by a local accountability group that the House was amongst the most corrupt institutions in Sierra Leone.

18-year-old Micford Walker-Johnson has been reported to have allegedly taken his own life for scoring a poor grade in Mathematics in the recently published result of the West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

He was reported to have hanged himself on Sunday with his belt over a bathtub in the restroom at their Berwick Street residence in Freetown where he resided with his mother and stepfather.

Good news for poor nations as GAVI raises $2 billion for Covid-19 vaccine

The Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunization (GAVI) said it has secured US$2billion in funding as part of efforts to procure COVID-19 vaccines for poor nations.

GAVI is a public–private global health partnership with the goal of increasing access to immunisation in poor countries. The group helps vaccinate almost half the world’s children against deadly and debilitating infectious diseases.

UN deputy chief meets Sierra Leone's president

The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed, over the weekend met with President Julius Maada Bio as part of her now concluded visit to Sierra Leone.

Ms Mohamed, whose visit to the country is part of a West Africa wide tour, was at State House to discuss efforts towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and support to COVID–19 socio-economic response and recovery plans, according to a news dispatch from the presidency.
