Sierra Leone Vice President hosts regional APRM delegation

Vice President Dr Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh has assured a regional the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) mission of his government’s commitment to cooperate its findings and recommendations.

Dr Jalloh made the assurance at a meeting with the 7-man delegation which called on him at his office in Freetown on Friday.

The delegation was accompanied to the Vice Presidency by the Sierra Leone National Governance Council. Officials said the visit was meant to share their mission objectives.

Sierra Leone opposition MP opposes petroleum agreement

Sierra Leone Parliament is set to approve a trade agreement between the government and an oil and gas company, the All Petroleum Product (APP), despite opposition from a leading opposition MP, Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella of the National Grand Coalition (NGC).

Yumkella, who is also known as KKY, argued last week, Tuesday, 17 November, that the company did not have a track record of petroleum business and that the tax waiver concession is huge and not in the interest of the country.

Social Workers Sierra Leone calls for more attention to mental distress

The campaign group Social Workers Sierra Leone (SWSL) has called on the Government of Sierra Leone to pay closer attention to people going through mental traumas.

The organization made the call as part of a statement issued in response to the reported death of a youngster who alleged took his own life in expression of frustration for failing in a public examination. SWSL said in its statement said it stands in solidarity with and griefs with the family of the late Micford Walker-Johnson.

34 communities declared open defaecation free in Sierra Leone

Some 34 communities have been declared open defaecation free in Sierra Leone.

The declaration was made as part of this year’s commemoration of World Toilet Day (WTD), which was observed on Thursday 19th November.

The communities are spread across four districts: Bonthe, Falaba, Port Loko and Koinadugu.

Regional APRM delegation visits Sierra Leone

The government of Sierra Leone is playing host to a delegation from the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM).

The 7-man delegation arrived in the country on Thursday, 19th November. Officials say the purpose of their visit is to systematically assess and review Sierra Leone’s governance structure in order to promote political stability, continental economic growth, and sustainable development, among other objectives.

Sierra Leone anticorruption agency considers warrant to arrest former president

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) says the planned interviewing of former President Ernest Bai Koroma on Thursday, November 19, did not materialize because he did not show up.

The scheduled interview is in relation to allegations made by the ACC that there is evidence to suggest that he was involved in money laundering and the awarding of phony contracts, among others.

The ACC Commissioner, Francis Ben Kaifala told Politico that he was “considering issuing a warrant” for the arrest of the former president.

Disaster looms on Cline Town- Shell highway in Sierra Leone's capital

Drivers and passengers who frequently use the Jenner Wright Road and Bai Bureh Road in the east end of Freetown have expressed fears over the risk posed by trucks frequently parked along the routes.

The trucks are owned or managed by owners of private factories and dealers in cements, notably the Fawaz Building Materials, Ahmed Mackie Building Materials Store and the Milla Group of Companies.
