Embattled Member of Parliament representing Constituency 003 in Kailahun District, Hindolo Gevao, has apologized to a Committee of Parliament as contained in a recorded audio that has circulated on social media.
Gevao had earlier been suspended from the Chairmanship of the Legislative Committee of Parliament after he reportedly confirmed on a BBC radio interview claims by a local accountability group that the House was amongst the most corrupt institutions in Sierra Leone.
Asked about his views on the report by the Centre for Accountability and Rule of Law (CARL), Gevao had told the BBC that one couldn’t shy away from the truth. His interview polarized opinion in the country and drew the ire of his colleagues that subsequently led to his suspension pending investigation by the Privileges and Ethics Committee of parliament.
In the latest audio recording, Gevao could be heard apologizing to the Committee, saying: “If the entire membership of Parliament is not happy with me, it would mean I am being ostracized, and I wouldn’t want to be ostracised’’. He added that parliament was for him a family and his representation there was to help in the governance system. Gevao viewed his statement in the radio interview as ‘’only a comment on the allegation’’ contained in the CARL report for which he said he was ‘’profusely sorry’’. He pleaded with the Committee to have ‘’the matter resolved amicably’’.
The various speakers in the Committee responded positively to Gevao’s apology and said that was what they have been waiting for. It was not stated whether or when he might resume his position as head of the Legislative Committee.
