Sierra Leone chief medcial officer calls for review of commitment to HIV response

Sierra Leone’s Chief Medical Officer, Rev. Dr. Thomas T. Samba, has called for a review of commitment to the fight against the global HIV/AIDS pandemic in Sierra Leone.

Dr Samba was speaking at a Civil Society Dialogue on HIV/AIDS conference held on Monday, November 30th, ahead of the commemoration of World AIDS Day (WAD) on December 1.

Judiciary undergoing massive reforms

The judiciary of Sierra Leone, one of the three arms of government, has been undergoing some massive face-lifting and reformation over the last two years, under the leadership of Chief Justice Desmond Babatunde Edwards.

Appointed by President Julius Maada Bio in December 2018, after the general elections, Chief Justice Edwards has so far been engaged in transforming the judiciary in order to match with international best practices.

ASA-USL meeting fails to proceed

A planned meeting convened by the executive of the University of Sierra Leone’s Academic Staff Association (ASA-USL) failed to proceed on Tuesday, 01 December, amidst an ongoing lecturers’ strike over pay.

The meeting, according to ASA, was meant to update members of the association on progress on the industrial action.

MP concerned about Agriculture budget

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture, Sallieu Osman Sesay of Constituency 038 in Bombali District, has expressed concern over the limited budget allocated to the agriculture docket. Hon. Sesay said that the budget does not meet the Maputo Declaration.

According to the Maputu Protocol, an African Union agreement, all member countries should allocated at least 10 percent of their national budget to the agriculture sector annually.

Judiciary commences November criminal session

The judiciary of Sierra Leone has commenced the November criminal session of the High Court in Freetown before presiding judge Monfred Sesay. 

The ceremony commenced on Monday 30th November 2020 with   fifty six cases (56) that included murder, wounding with intent, robbery with aggravation and sexual penetration, which tops the list of offences with a total of twenty five cases.

A former labourer at the Male Correctional Centre in Freetown yesterday appeared at the Magistrate Court no.2 on a murder charge. Abass Kamara 38 was alleged to have murdered Ibrahim Kargbo in Freetown on the 18th September 2020.

Former pupil donates to Saint Edwards Primary

A former pupil of Saint Edwards Primary School in Freetown, Alphonso Williams, has donated furniture to the institution.

The presentation of the furniture was made by his daughter on his behalf, as he is presently in the United Kingdom.

Presenting the items which included benches and tables Alphina Williams said the children have been suffering for lack of furniture and believed it will be of great benefit to them. 100 tables and 108 benches were given to the school
