ECOWAS Women’s Capacity building conference ends in Sierra Leone

A three-day regional conference jointly organized by the Economic Community of West African States Commission and the United Nations Development agency (UNDP) aimed at enhancing the capacity of women to maximize opportunities in the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) will today end in Freetown.

The capacity building workshop brought together women-led organizations across the region. Participants are expected to take the knowledge gained from the deliberations to their respective countries.

SOS Children’s Village reaches out to fire victims

SOS Children’s Villages Sierra Leone on Thursday 1 April donated food and non-food items to the fire victims at Susan’s Bay. Some of the items include 35 bags of 25kg imported rice for families of the most vulnerable children, dignity kits for adolescent girls, buckets,  beddings, toiletries   and other assorted items.

Action Aid assures Sierra Leone of continued support

The Executive Director of Action Aid , Foday Bassie Swarray has assured Sierra Leone of the organization’s resolve and commitment in supporting and promoting development across the country. Action Aid seeks social justice, gender equality and poverty eradication.

Swarray made this statement on Thursday 1st April 2021 during the organization’s 2021 budget and programmes rollout ceremony organised at Hill Valley Hotel in Freetown.

Sierra Leone calls on Russia to lift travel restrictions

Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Russia Mohamed Yongawo has called on the Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for the Middle East and Africa, Mikhail Bogdanov to lift travel restrictions in order to allow Sierra Leonean students on scholarship in Russia to commence studies.

According to the Information Attache’ at the Sierra Leone Embassy in Moscow, Festus Lahai, the Ambassador made the call during an engagement with Bogdanvo who also doubles as the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs at the Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Call for drug abuse referral units in hospitals

The Vice President of Sierra Leone Alcohol Policy Alliance (SLAPA) and  Executive Director of Social Linkages for Youth Development and Child Link, Habib Taigore Kamara, has called on government to establish drug abuse referral units in hospitals across the country instead of sending cases of substance abuse to the Kissy Psychiatric  Hospital.

Save the Children ends adolescent health project in Sierra Leone

Save the Children Sierra Leone with support from its partners has ended its adolescent sexual and reproductive health project titled “mek wi tok bot mamie en daddi biziness” (let’s talk about sex).

The project which started in 2019, focuses on  raising awareness about the negative effects of teenage pregnancy and to advocate for good services in terms of adolescent sexual reproductive health and has been implemented in four communities in the Western Area including Murray Town, Aberdeen, Cockle Bay and Connaught.
