Storm hits Falaba District headquarter

A heavy rain storm on Monday 17 May 2021 has left  a sizeable number of  people homeless in the Falaba district headquarter town of Mongo Bendugu.

12 dwelling houses and the Ansarul Islamic Nursery, Primary and Secondary School buildings were destroyed by the storm with learning materials completely buried under the rubble.

The storm also affected farming activities with damages done to stores containing crops, other farm produce and seeds. Agricultural tools were also lost.

Sierra Rutile to suspend operations

The Iluka Resources Limited has in a press statement announced suspension of Sierra Rutile operations in Sierra Leone due to certain difficulties encountered by the business.

According to the statement, the six month notice is a result of the acute business challenges the company has been facing, particularly since the covid-19 outbreak, noting that its operational performance has been below expectation which has resulted in  financial unsustainability.

DCI urges Sierra Leone gov't to decentralize sexual offences court

In a bid to strengthen its professional status, the Sierra Leone Teaching Service Commission (TSC) is set to introduce license system as requirement to practice the teaching profession in Sierra Leone. 

The process of registering and licensing teachers according to TSC officials would continue this year with World Bank support.

Price of pepper more than triples in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone’s capital Freetown recently experienced a sudden hike in the price of pepper which according to many consumers affected their budget for food in their homes.

The inflated price of pepper started a day before the Muslim end of fasting feast (Eid-Ul-Fitr) holiday during which it was sold at 10, 000 Leones per cup from Le 2,000 in some local markets.
