Sierra Leone opposition leader reacts to Parliamentary Committee Exclusion

Dr.  Kandeh Yumkella of the National Grand Coalition (NGC) Party in Parliament has in an interview with Politico said he has no idea why he was not included in the composition of the Selection or Supervisory Committees of the House that was announced this week.   

The opposition NGC leader said he could not find an answer to his exclusion from the committees and suggested that the question be directed at the Speaker of the Parliament Dr. Abass Bundu. “Why all the other leaders are there but not Yumkella”, he retorted.

Sierra Leone and Saudi Arabia to strengthen ties

In an effort to strengthen the bilateral relationship between Sierra Leone and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Sierra Leone’s mission, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are set to sign a cooperation agreement.

The agreement between the two countries according to officials would promote cooperation between the two nations in the areas of trade, investment, education, science, culture, tourism sports and the economy, among others.

Sierra Leone's Eastern Polytechnic prepares for university status

As part of preparations for its proposed university status by October 2021, the Eastern Polytechnic has on the 23rd June 2021 conducted in-service training for academic and senior staff of the college in Kenema.

Speaking at the orientation ceremony, the Vice Principal of the institution, Gbessay Amodu said the training was very important as it is the first time for some of the staff to know the principles and policies binding them as lecturers to the students and the nation.

Sierra Leone urged HRC to provide technical support

In a bid to Strengthen Human Rights Mechanisms, Sierra Leone’s Deputy Ambassador to Geneva, Switzerland Samuel U.B. Saffa Esq. has urged the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) to continue to provide technical and capacity building supports to member states, and to strengthen national human rights institutions and mechanisms. 

 The Ambassador made this call at the ongoing 47th Session of the Human Rights Council; during the annual report of the High Commissioner on Wednesday 23rd June 2021.

Sierra Tropical limited invests in pineapple plantation

Sierra Tropical limited, a pineapple producing company has invested 42 million dollars into pineapple production at Sumbuya, Lugbu chiefdom, in Bo district, southern Sierra Leone.

According to the company’s Manager, Patrick Blake, the company is currently cultivating 300 out of 4,335 hectares already leased to produce 200,000 tons of Pineapple juice per annum and has employed 1,250 people from eleven communities in Lugbu Chiefdom.
