Sierra Leone president departs for Global Education Summit

 President Julius Maada Bio on Sunday 25th July 2021 departed Sierra Leone for London to attend the Global Education Summit on the invitation of Boris Johnson, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Uhruhu Muigai Kenyatta, President of the Republic of Kenya  co-hosting this year’s Global Education Summit. 

Deforestation threatens Sierra Leone’s main electricity source

The Minister of Energy, Alhaji Kanja Sesay has expressed concerns over what he referred to as “worrying reports” about the adverse impact of human activities such as deforestation and farming that have posed a threat to the survival and efficiency of the Bumbuna Hydroelectric Dam that serves the city and some parts of the northern region.

Sierra Leone to reserve 30% seats for women – Gender empowerment bill

In an effort to bridge the gender divide in governance, the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs has developed a bill proposing 30% elective positions for women through reserved seat mechanisms.

The Bill, according to the Minister of Gender and Children Affairs Manty Tarawalli has already got cabinet and Presidential approval and that she has been authorized to lay the document before parliament for enactment into law.  She added that despite efforts made gender equality remains a challenge.

Nigerian shops in Sierra Leone to close Monday for Biafra leader

Many Nigerian-owned shops in Sierra Leone will close on Monday 26 July in solidarity with the Biafra separatist leader, Nnamdi Kanu who is due to appear in court in Abuja on the same day.

According to Mazi Chidi Tendency Uchendu, the National Coordinator in Sierra Leone of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), their shops will be closed “in support of our leader who was kidnapped in Kenya and is due to appear in court on…Monday”.

Sierra Leone's parliament to scrutinize death penalty bill

Members of Parliament will today Friday 23rd July, 2021 scrutinize the death penalty in the country’s law books for possible repeal. The process should have commenced on the 21st July but was postponed by the Speaker Chernor Abass Bundu in order to get the views of other stakeholders on the said bill.
