Peter Penfold presents portraits of Chiefs to Museum

Former British High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, Komrabai Peter Penfold, has presented portraits of dozens of local Paramount Chiefs to the National Museum in Freetown, in recognition of their role in society.

The portraits were displayed at the Museum on 29th November, 2022.

Parliament steps into Port Loko Bauxite case

After weeks of arguments and demonstrations, Parliament has moved to investigate issues raised by the landowners of Maforki and Marampa chiefdoms in Portloko district regarding a bauxite mining concession earmarked for CTC Mining Company in Sierra Leone.

A letter from the office of the Clerk of Parliament has summoned “all affected and/or interested persons/parties of the Public Disclosure, including members of parliament of those chiefdoms…” to a public meeting in parliament on Monday 5th December, 2022.

A call for Sierra Leone to focus on productive sector

The Chief Executive Officer of Belvedere Sierra Leone Limited, Dr. Patrick Kormawa, has called for Sierra Leone to focus on production activities, saying that it's the only means of salvaging the current economic crisis in the country.

The CEO was speaking at the Second Annual Conference of the Economic Association of Sierra Leone (EASL), with the theme “Economic Uncertainties, COVID-19 and Geopolitical Tensions: The Way Forward for Sierra Leone and Africa.”

Miner remanded for “fraud”

Magistrate Mark Ngegba of Pademba Road Court No. 1 in Freetown has remanded Aruna Bangura, a miner at the Siplina Venture Limited, for allegedly defrauding Dr. Cyprian Okoro, owner of the company, properties worth over NLe150,000 (one hundred and fifty thousand Leones).

On Monday 28th November 2022, the accused, Bangura, made his first appearance to answer to charges related to Fraudulent Conversion.

No subvention for Sierra Leone political parties

Members of Parliament have expunged the clause in the Bill entitled Political Parties Act 2022 which proposed that political parties be given subvention from Government resources.

Deputy Minister of Justice, Umaru Napoleon Koroma on the 24th November 2022 after the passage of the bill into an Act explained to journalists that government had had in the bill a proposal to fund political parties by giving them subvention, but said MPs saw the provision as a burden on tax payers’ money and therefore expunged the clause.

UN Women celebrates Sierra Leone’s new Gender Laws

The United Nations gender agency UN Women has acknowledged its support for the successful enactment of the 2022 Gender Bill.

At a press conference held at Radisson Blu in Freetown, the group commended President Julius Maada Bio and the Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs Manty Tarawally for the achievement.
