PPRC orders APC to conduct rerun elections

The Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) has ordered the Transitional Interim Independent Elections Management Committee (TIIEMC) of the opposition All People’s Congress (APC)  to conduct rerun elections in Constituencies 111, 106 Western Rural, 040 Falaba, 045 Koinadugu and 092 in Bonthe.

Sierra Leone prisons in dire need of urgent reforms – High Court judge

High Court Judge Ivan Sesay says much needed to be done to improve the welfare of inmates at three correctional centres in Freetown. Responding to a report by a senior correctional officer in court at the end of a criminal session last Friday the judge said urgent reforms are needed at the Male and Female Correctional Centres and the Reintegration facility, citing appalling conditions.

Sierra Leone court warns opposition leadership of contempt of court

Justice Adrian Fisher of the High Court of Sierra Leone has warned the Executive members of the Interim Transition Governance Committee (ITGC) of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) that they would be jailed for contempt of court if they continue acting contrary to orders of the court’s ruling.

The judge said this at the hearing on Monday of the application for the extension of the date for lower level election of the political party.

Sierra Leonean girlfriend ‘’killer’’ nabbed in Guinea

A young man who disappeared from Susan’s Bay in Freetown after the battered body of his 24 year-old girlfriend was discovered in a room has been apprehended and detained in Conakry, Guinea.

The suspect Ishmael Koroma was reportedly spotted by a Sierra Leonean at a fishing wharf in Conakry and knew he had been on the run following the brutal killing of his girlfriend Fatmata Sesay at the fishing community of Moa Wharf , Freetown  in November last year.  

CSOs call on Sierra Leone president to reduce mobile phone tariff

A coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) & Citizens in a letter addressed to President Julius Maada Bio have urged Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to completely reverse the Data tariff increment.

The voice tariff was also said to have been increased by almost 150%.

42 MPs oppose annulment of public election rules

42 members of Parliament have voted against the annulment of the Public Elections (Petitions) Rules 2022. An open vote was exercised following a private member’s motion proposed by APC Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Chernor Maju Bah.

The motion proposed by Bah was not carried, after his colleagues voted against his proposition. 22 others voted for the annulment, while 4 MPs from NGC did not participate in the voting process.

Sierra Leone MP wants effective ECOWAS

The Leader of the opposition in Parliament Chernor Maju Bah has urged the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mamadi Gobeh Kamara to encourage ECOWAS to be effective, stating that with an effective regional body, protocols bordering agreements between the Governments of Sierra Leone and the Republic of Gambia will not be brought to parliament.

Bah made this call on the 24th January 2023, during his debate on the four agreements between the government of Sierra Leone and the Republic of The Gambia, and  Qatar.
