Widow testifies in husband’s murder trial case

Mrs. Kama Sesay, wife of Zaioux Sesay, who is deceased, allegedly murdered by seven men, testified at the High Court last Wednesday before Justice Monfred Sesay.

The witness recognized all the accused persons and admitted knowing the 2nd accused as her neighbor and as being among those who attacked her home sometime in 2017. She also recognized the 3rd accused as the son of her neighbor who is the fourth accused.

Judge dismisses charges against Rhanda Shaikay

Justice Ivan Ansumana Sesay has struck down a two count indictment of larceny in a dwelling house and larceny by servant against one Rhanda Skaikay, citing what he called defective indictment.

The ruling, last Thursday, came after defense lawyer Mohamed Pa-Momoh Fofanah filed an application dated 14th July, 2020, challenging the court’s jurisdiction on the grounds upheld by the judge. 

Sierra Leone opposition C4C party in turmoil

The opposition Coalition for Change (C4C) party seems to be in disarray after moves on Monday to change its leadership caucus in parliament backfired.

In a statement issued on Wednesday through its National Secretary General, the party announced the change in its leadership structure in the House, saying it had dropped Saa Emerson Lamina as its caucus leader. But Lamina has rejected the move, calling it “illegal”. He has vowed to stay on.

Sierra Leone to get forensic lab in 2021

Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Manty Tarawally says the much-needed forensic laboratory will soon be set up in Sierra Leone.

Speaking to Politico, she said “We have put together a committee. And they’re actually working towards the end of year or first quarter next year” to set it up.

Ms Tarawally said it was a highly technical project with different components needing to be put together or considered when doing this.

Le15 Bn bailout for four Sierra Leone state enterprises

Four state owned enterprises are to receive a bailout package totaling Le15 billion, according to the supplementary budget for the 2020 Financial Year.

The four enterprises that will benefit from the bailout are, according to the document presented to parliament by Minister of Finance Jacob Jusu Saffa last week are the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLAA), Sierra Leone Airports Authority (SLAA), Sierra Leone Road Transport Corporation (SLRTC) and the Sierra Leone Postal Services (SALPOST).

Sierra Leone supplementary budget: Le308.8 billion for health docket

Some Le308.8 billion was allocated to the health sector for the remaining time in the current financial year, according to details of the supplementary budget presented to parliament last week.

Finance Minister, Jacob Jusu Saffa, said the amount included Le200 billion as the contribution of the Government of Sierra Leone to the operations of the National Covid-19 Emergency Response Center (NaCOVERC).

The supplementary budget was presented to the House on Friday July 24.

Moyamba District to host wildlife corridor for animals

Five rural communities in the Bagruwa Chiefdom, Moyamba District, have commenced activities geared towards connecting three patches of forest in order to create the first corridor for wildlife species in Sierra Leone.

The communities: Mobondah, Mai, Mokombo, Yelleh and Sorbengi, have been discovered to have two secondary forests surrounded by mangroves, which will provide a home for a number of key wildlife species.
