The Ministry of Transport and Aviation has contracted PAVIFORT AL-Ayhanlar Holdings JV, a local construction company, for the implementation of part of a project designed for the improvement on roads, intersections and traffic signalizations in the Western Urban.
The contract is under the Integrated and Resilient Urban Mobility Project (IRUMP) implemented by the Ministry. The World Bank funded project costing US$50million was signed in July 2019, to be implemented in five years.
The deal with PAVIFORT was inked on Thursday 23rd July 2020 between officials of the ministry and the company.
Minister of Transport and Aviation, Kabineh Kallon, according to a news dispatch from the Strategic Communication Unit of the Ministry of Information and Communication, described the signing as “remarkable.”
Giving a background of the World Bank funded project, Minister Kallon disclosed that it was initially meant to be a US$20million project as designed by the Ernest Bai Koroma administration, but that the Bio administration reengaged the donor to increase the funding and scope of the project.
The Minister noted that awarding the contract to a Sierra Leonean company was in line with President Julius Maada Bio's vision of promoting local content.
According to the news release, the official handing over ceremony of the project site to the contractor was scheduled for Saturday 25th July.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Aviation, Brima Sowa, admonished Sierra Leoneans to make the project their own by monitoring and evaluating it for the benefit of all.
The Chairman and CEO of PAVIFORT AL-Ayhanlar Holdings JV, Alimou S. Barrie, thanked the minister and his team for entrusting them as a locally based company. He assured that they would endeavor to exceed the expectation in implementing the project.
