Sierra Leone lights up Bathurst after 204 years of existence!

Minister of Energy, Kanja Sesay made history on Tuesday when he connected Bathurst to the national power grid to light up the township for the first time in its 204-year existence.

The 1,000 KV transmitter electrified the colonial settlement situated just outside the capital, Freetown, with the minister saying that it was enough to power some surrounding communities.

Sierra Leone Police to deploy 160 peacekeepers in Somalia

The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) is set to dispatch 160 police officers to Somalia on a peace keeping mission this month.

An SLP spokesman said the men personnel will be deployed in two batches of 80 each. The first batch is expected to depart Freetown this Saturday, 6th September.

Sierra Leone army lobbies finance ministry for budget increment

The Republic Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) is seeking for an increment in its yearly funding to enable it invest more on its personnel with the goal of improving on their working condition and maximizing their public service delivery.

The military high command, headed by the recently appointed Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Sullay Sesay, met with Finance Minister Jacob Jusu Saffa on Wednesday, according to a news dispatch from the Ministry.

Sierra Leone's defence ministry recognizes retired wounded soldiers

The Ministry of Defence has issued a statement confirming a permanent closure to matters pertaining to the benefits of retired Wounded In Action (WIA) personnel of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF).

The release dated 31st August, 2020 observed that the payment of  retirement benefits to the said former soldiers has been a long drawn out issue that successive governments have ‘’grappled with over the years’’. 

A third of world’s school pupils can’t access remote learning - UNICEF

A report by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has revealed a dismal picture of access to learning by school children during the ongoing COVID -19 pandemic. The report, which comes just as countries are engaged in plans for schools to reopen, claims that some 463 million school children (at least a third of the world’s school population) are unable to access remote learning through online or internet at the height of the coronavirus.
