Sierra Leone varsity expels 39 students, rusticates 140

The University of Sierra Leone (USL) administration has announced the expulsion of 39 students from the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM), and suspended 140 others for a period of one and two years , after they were found culpable of  examination malpractices in the 2019/ 2020 academic year.  Nine other students were exonerated whilst seven final year students had their results withheld for a period of one year.

15 years, Le 10 million fine for rapist

Justice Jamestina King has sentenced one Ibrahim Sesay, 37, to 15 years imprisonment and levied him a fine of 10 million Leones after he was found guilty of sexually penetrating and impregnating a 12 year old primary school pupil.

Sesay was said to have had sexual intercourse with the victim between the 1st to the 30th June 2017 in Lumley in the west of Freetown. The abuse allegedly occurred during the holy month of Ramadan.

Police, EPA clamp down on illegal miners

The Sierra Leone Police and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have mounted an operation in the south of the country, targeting illegal gold miners. The operation was concentrated in two chiefdoms Peje and Kabonde in the Pujehun district where there is said to be a large concentration of illegal mining activities believed to be spearheaded by mostly foreign nationals. 

ACC indicts former Mines Officer

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has indicted a former Mines Compliance Officer of the National Mineral Agency (NMA) and of No. 26 Azzolini Highway Makeni, Daniel Kapri Serry on five counts of corruption offences.  According to the charge sheert, Serry on different occasions between the 1st February 2021 and 29th February 2021 accepted bribe for himself in order to make use of his influence to obtain a benefit from a public body.   

Police chief commends partnership board

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ambrose Sovula has commended the Local Policing Partnership Board (LPPB) for their effort in assisting the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) in curbing crime in the nation.

The IGP was addressing members of the West Division of the LPPB at their monthly meeting on the 28th August 2021 held at the Family Kingdom, Aberdeen in Freetown.

UAE lifts travel suspension on Sierra Leone

The United Arab Emirates (UAE)  on Monday 30th  August  2021 issued a press release announcing the lifting of travel suspension on all countries which were not granted entry to the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the joint statement by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA) and the National Emergency Crisis and Disasters Management Authority, starting the 30th August 2021, applications for tourist visas would be open to travelers from all countries.

“He used a stick on me” –says Sierra Leone child victim

A 14 year old girl suspected to have been subjected to sexual abuse has told Justice Samuel Omodele Taylor that one Mohamed Sesay 28 did an anal penetration in her using a stick.

The mentally challenged girl was testifying at the Sexual Offences Model Court in Freetown on Monday 30th August 2021 being led by State Prosecutor, Idrissa Abass Kamara.
